Now that the iPhone 4S is going on sale in US and a few more cities, it is natural to start asking when would it make it to India? the 3GS and the iPhone 4 had their delays before launching in India and the ones who are skeptical about the India launch of iPhone 4S have a good reason defend their thinking. But against that belief, I believe that the iPhone 4S can very well make it to India before year end. given our past record with iPad 2 and iPhone news, let me make it clear that this I ain’t reporting any of our sources here, but to your comfort, our friends at BGR India have heard from their sources.

So why do we think Apple will launch the iPhone 4S in India before year end?

Many reason. The very first being, Apple has promised to be in 70 countries by year end and while they did make similar promise for the iPhone 4, we know that they had issues meeting demand and after the holiday season quarter last year, they revealed on the conference call that they could have sold much more if they could make enough iPhones. When I say that the 4S will come to India before year end, it is a sign of optimism that Apple would be able to manufacture enough 4S to meet the demand, clearly they have had enough time to work on it.

Apple launches all its Macs & iPods in India right after the international launch and we see no reason for them to keep handhelds out. With the iPhone and the iPad 2 they have struggled to meet demand and hence the delays in launching in India, the iPad 2 as we know made it to India shortly after International launch and that was quite a surprise for many of us. Same happening for iPhone 4S is likely.

The iPhone 3GS has got a price cut and is retailing around Rs 19,000 in India and the iPhone 4 is unlocked and selling with Airtel / Aircel. Our bet is on an unlocked iPhone 4S coming down to India before year end and we haven’t bothered to ping a source for this, it is logical.

Motorola bets on recycled Razr brand

Razr is back. After being criticized for depending on the four letter brand for too long, Motorola is hoping to draw some more blood from the stone with the new Droid Razr in the U.S. market. It will be called plain old Razr in the rest of the world.

Analysts are already predicting that the new phones won’t reach the 130 million unit sales that Motorola boasts for Razr over several years. but the jury is still out on whether using the old brand that came to symbolize the company’s downfall will help sales of the latest phone, which it is touting as the world’s thinnest smartphone.

“We tend to see it more in the auto industry where Dodge brought back the Charger and Volkswagen brought back the Beetle. Volkswagen did well,” said NPD analyst Ross Rubin. but the modern Beetle is an updated model that is recognizable as a descendent of an old car that dates back to pre-war Germany. The Droid Razr is a tablet-like device with a 4.3 inch display that looks nothing like the original flip-phone Razr.

“It probably creates a weaker association than if the product had been a flip-phone,” said Rubin, adding that while the retro-branding was “not a bad idea”, it would be unlikely to make a huge difference to Motorola’s sales of the gadget.

Avaian Securities analyst Matthew Thornton was more enthusiastic: “I like it. If you think about the Motorola brand and what it’s tied to, it is Razr. I think it’s a smart play. The thing the Razr stood for was thinness.”

He pointed to Sony’s success transferring the brand of the Walkman portable cassette player to a cellphone line and its use of the Cybershot camera brand for camera phones. The Sony phones were popular until consumers’ focus turned to more powerful smartphones such as the iPhone.

“The products themselves were fine. they just missed what was next,” Thornton said, speaking about both Motorola and Sony.

But here’s a trip down memory lane. Motorola depended on the Razr for its runaway success between late 2004 and late 2006. By early 2007 it was no longer a status symbol to own the thin phone and some consumers were even coy about admitting that they still had one. The company was criticized at the time for depending on Razr for too long and sent its then CEO packing as a result. It did everything it could to prolong the Razr franchise — remember the pink one that was promoted for Valentine’s day? — and then in different shapes and sizes with Razr-inspired four-letter brands like Pebl and KRZR.

Maybe this time it’ll be different. Rubin noted that the new Razr’s fate won’t rest on any consumers dwelling on the history of Motorola, which is being sold to Google.

RIM Got Almost Everything Wrong

The core switch failure that rocked Research in Motion and left its millions of BlackBerry users with slow or inaccessible email for up to three days could have cost the company as much as $350 million (£224m), or one month of subscriber fees, according to financial analysts.

RIM’s infrastructure went haywire 10 October, in its Slough data center, only to have it spread across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, and eventually include Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Canada and the United States. Service was fully restored across all countries by 14 October.

RIM declined to name the core switch manufacturer, noting that it “works with multiple vendors and it is premature to discuss root cause until a full analysis has taken place.”

Declining to throw its gear makers under the bus may be one of the few things the company did right in handling the situation.

Noting that RIM’s user base is questioning RIM’s traditionally rock solid reliability, Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek said RIM may lose as much as $350 million (but probably less), as RIM has over 70 million subscribers with an average monthly fee of $5.

“we believe refunding more than a month’s worth of fees is unlikely,” Misek said. Moreover, any monies paid would seem to be inconsequential in light of the damage to the company’s brand worldwide – and so far RIM is offering free apps in compensation.

“in our view, this opens the door to competitors as corporate CTOs and IT departments may now be more open to explore other options besides the BlackBerry standard,” Misek added.

That’s good news for Apple’s iPhone and Google Android handsets, which are already gaining traction in the enterprise. Misek said RIM’s new BlackBerry OS 7 handsets, the 9900 and 9930, are already seeing slow sales in October after early adopters purchased those phones in September.

It doesn’t help that Apple is offering its 3GS iPhone free on contract, or that low-cost Android phones are rising up worldwide to nibble at RIM’s subscriber base and market share.

“While no time is a good time for a massive system failure, the time of this failure given RIM’s position in the current market with dropping market share and everyone looking at them with a magnifying glass means that this failure has much higher visibility than it might have gotten a couple of years ago,” industry analyst Jack Gold told eWEEK.

Still, Forrester Research analyst Stephen Mann said RIM couldn’t have mismanaged customers’ expectations more poorly if it tried.

“Communications have been lacking and one could argue that their tone has been terse – a far cry from customer-focused,” Mann wrote on his corporate blog. “Surely the modern service-savvy customer, whether corporate or not, is not prepared to be treated in this way. in many ways, RIM has not only now fully opened the front door to its competitors it has also invited them in and provided them with a pipe and slippers.”

Against this black backdrop, RIM will soldier on. Its BlackBerry DevCon Americas conference starts today in San Francisco.

Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Jeffrey Fidacaro said RIM is expected to launch a major upgrade to its QNX operating system, the platform behind the BlackBerry PlayBook and the company’s forthcoming “super” smartphones, as well as the QNX developer platform.

This upgrade, already delayed from its intended summer launch, will bring native BlackBerry email, contacts and calendar applications to the PlayBook and sync them with BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Consummation of this engineering feat will let analysts know just how credible is RIM’s plan to port QNX to smartphones in early 2012.

It will also signal to potential acquirers that RIM can handle the technology integration between BlackBerry and QNX, added Misek, noting that Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and others may be looking at RIM as a target.

Although the iPhone 3GS lacks some of the features of the iPhone 4, most notably a front facing camera for FaceTime calls, it’s no slouch when it comes to mobile phones. if you’re new to the iPhone, you certainly can’t go wrong with a free iPhone 3GS.

Reports state that the promotion is available to all, including upgrades and additional lines of service. The only downside is that you will have to sign a 2-year agreement with AT&T, but if you’re in the market for an iPhone, and you’re in the USA, you knew that already.

There’s currently no word on whether or not Best Buy will run a similar promotion outside of the USA.

AT&T, Verizon and Sprint iPhone 4S plans: Which is cheapest?

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — If you’re getting the new iPhone 4S, you now have three options for wireless service: AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. unfortunately, there’s no app for choosing the right plan.

If you use just a little bit of data each month, you’ll probably save money by picking AT&T. If you use a typical amount of data and texts, Verizon is probably your cheapest option, and if you’re a data fiend, Sprint is likely the best bet.

But, of course, it’s not quite that simple.

AT&T (T, Fortune 500) offers the cheapest and potentially the fastest iPhone. Verizon’s (VZ, Fortune 500) network rates highest among customers in terms of satisfaction and service quality. And Sprint (S, Fortune 500) offers the only iPhone with an all-you-can eat data plan.

It’s a lot to take in. take a deep breath, and we’ll try to help you sort through this mess.

What are the plans? Determining how much you’ll pay depends heavily on how much data and texting you think you’ll use.

Sprint offers an unlimited data and texting plan with 450 voice minutes for $80 a month. If you download a little or a lot, text a ton or not at all, it’s still $80.

AT&T and Verizon make it trickier to figure out. Both plans are potentially cheaper than Sprint’s — or much more expensive.

AT&T customers who never text, use 2 GB of data or less and use 450 or fewer voice minutes are the clear price winners. the cheapest available plan costs just $55 for those who use up to 200 MB — a full $15 a month cheaper than any competitors’ plan.

But texting doesn’t come cheap at AT&T. the carrier recently eliminated all but its 20-cent-per-text and its $20 unlimited texting plans. that means customers who use less than 200 MB but send more than 75 texts per month, or use more than 200 MB and send at least 25 texts per month, would pay less with an alternate carrier’s plan.

That’s where Verizon comes in: for those who send a moderate amount of texts, Verizon is the price-tag winner. If you send 250 texts per month or fewer, download 2 GB of data or less and use 450 voice minutes, Verizon will charge you $75 a month — less than Sprint’s $80 or AT&T’s $85 plans.

The trouble is, figuring out how much data you’ll need is an inexact science.

A data plan with a 200 megabyte cap gets you about 1,000 Web pages, 300 photo downloads, 50 songs, 11 YouTube videos, or just under an hour of Netflix videos. a 2 gigabyte plan gets you 13,000 Web pages, 4,000 photos, 600 songs, 130 YouTube videos or between six and 12 hours of Netflix viewing.

Now that that’s settled…

What are the phones? All three carriers will be offering the new iPhone 4S in black and white, and in 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB flavors.

Verizon and AT&T will continue to sell the iPhone 4 in the 16 GB and 32 GB varieties. all three carriers will offer the iPhone 4 with 8 GB of memory for $99.

AT&T will be the only carrier to sell the iPhone 3GS, which debuted in 2009. the two-year-old device will be offered for free with a new two-year contract.

What’s all this about AT&T offering the fastest iPhone 4S? It’s true. Sort of.

Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) unlocked a capability in the iPhone 4S to take advantage of AT&T’s new "4G" network, which operates on an enhanced 3G network standard called HSDPA. that network, which AT&T calls "4G," can potentially offer speeds of up to twice that of AT&T’s standard 3G network.

Potentially. as in, not realistically.

In real-life, non-laboratory scenarios, AT&T’s 4G-HSDPA speeds are often faster than it’s own and competitors’ 3G networks, but not by much. AT&T says its "4G" network offers speeds of between 700 kilobits per second and 1.7 megabits per second, while Verizon and Sprint’s 3G networks run between 500 Kbps and 1.2 Mbps.

Thoroughly confused? It’s okay. the good news is that whatever you choose, is not likely that your neighbor will be paying drastically less for an iPhone that is twice as fast as yours.
