Adobe Releases Free Official "Adobe Reader" App » 148Apps » iPhone and iPod Touch Application Reviews and News

Adobe has released their latest app for iOS, bringing one of their most used services to Apple in an official capacity for the first time. That’s right, Adobe Reader is now available as a free universal app. Those guessing Flash, we’re sorry, but that is probably never happening. still. Adobe Reader allows for PDF files to be opened and displayed from this app.

The advantage that Adobe Reader provides over other PDF reading solutions, which range from apps like GoodReader to even just Apple’s built-in PDF support in Mail and iBooks, comes from DRM support. the app supports files encoded with Adobe LiveCycle Rights Management, as well as PDFs encrypted up to AES256, which Adobe claims is “the highest grade of PDF encryption.” As well, it’s possible to search PDF text and copy text to the clipboard, print PDFs with AirPrint, share PDF files with other applications, and mail PDF files as attachments.

New iPhone 4S is solid, not remarkable

Apple’s iPhone 4S is a high-performing, easy-to-use smartphone, but you can tell its much-hyped Siri voice-recognition feature isn’t from around here.

Siri had a hard time understanding my mix of Boston accent and mumbling, but my editor had better luck asking questions such as “Where’s Whitey Bulger,” and “Who is the mayor of Boston?” — though it turns out Siri may be alone in not knowing the whereabouts of Whitey these days.

Some of the information Siri offered up was useful, while some of it was just amusing.

I asked Siri when it would be sunny again in Boston, and it brought up an extended forecast graphic and said it wouldn’t be sunny until next week. When I asked it what the best cellphone was, it replied, “What, are you kidding?”

Still, I’m not sure I’d use it routinely — or in public — when a regular, finger-controlled Google search would do the trick.

Apple’s Retina display is bright and clear, but at 3.5 inches, the 4S’ screen feels tiny compared to some of the larger Android phones, such as the 4-inch-plus screens of the HTC Amaze 4G and the Samsung Galaxy S 2.

The 4S’ 8-megapixel camera, and the HD video camera were easy to use, with the volume-up button working as a shutter button. You can also edit photos — crop, red-eye correct, rotate and auto-correct — right after taking them.

Apple’s new iCloud service also can automatically back up your photos on 5GB of free storage.

The latest version of Apple’s operating system, iOS 5, integrates Twitter throughout, so it’s easy to share photos or news stories directly from apps, rather than firing up the Twitter app.

The phone multitasks extremely well, playing music and surfing the Web at the same time easily, and keeping several other apps open in the background. Like some Android devices, it’s getting tough to tell whether an app is “on” or not.

I used an iPhone 4S on AT&T’s HSPA+ network yesterday morning, and the phone’s browser loaded Web pages speedily. in the evening, I used another one on Verizon’s 3G network, and it was comparably fast, though it slowed a bit downloading content, which I didn’t try on the AT&T phone.

A few hours of steady use drained the battery by about half, so you’ll want to keep a charger handy, but the iPhone 4S is easy and fun to use, and at $200 for the lowest priced 16 GB model, its price is consistent with comparable smartphones.

Four gadgets more important than iPhone 4S

Anyone with even a mild interest in technology knows that the iPhone 4S launched one week ago today. In what has now become a ritualistic media event, the new iPhone launch was covered in scrupulous detail, from pre-launch sales predictions, to pundit reviews, to interviews with Apple fans waiting in line to get their hands on the newest iProduct. Someone even made a website devoted to funny things Apple’s new voice command application, Siri, says. The hype tumbled into this week when people awoke Monday morning to find their RSS feeds ablaze with news that Apple had already sold 4 million iPhone 4Ses. Yesterday, AT&T said it had activated 1M iPhone 4Ses so far. iPhone 4S distribution expanded to 22 more countries — that’s 29 in all — today. Indeed, it feels like everyone in the world has iPhone on the mind.

Well, maybe not everyone. actually, not even close to everyone. most everyone, in fact, did not hear about the new iPhone launch or, if they did, they don’t care. Most of the world’s population has more pressing things to focus on than Siri’s pithy answer to the meaning of life. things like staying fed. Finding shelter. Mitigating the scourge of dire poverty and lack of opportunity for a better life. For many more billions, other recent technologies or innovations matter more than iPhone 4S.

For perspective, globalissues.org presents these sobering statistics (full list here):

  • Almost half the world — over three billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day.
  • At least 80 percent of humanity lives on less than $10 a day.
  • Rural areas account for three in every four people living on less than US$1 a day and a similar share of the world population suffers from malnutrition.

So using the world’s population as the metric, the launch of the iPhone 4S last week, and even its 22-country expansion today, isn’t big news at all. For most, gadgets like the iPhone 4S are utterly unattainable. For tech to be meaningful to a world audience it must be, first and foremost, affordable.

But wait, isn’t the iPhone 3GS free now? and the iPhone 4 only $99? Indeed, but those are carrier subsidized prices. Carrier subsidization is largely not available in many developing nations, like India. Customers in these markets pay full price for their feature phones, which makes iPhone unattainable to all but the most affluent. Everyone else is left out in the cold.

Luckily, there are gadgets that seek to bridge the digital divide. these gadgets are not the stuff of sleek industrial design and precision displays. Rather, this tech is stripped down, bare bones, gritty. Yet what it lacks in aesthetics, it makes up for in potential. Potential to change the lives of billions — for the better.

(Note: The scope of this article is on technological gadgets, not technology in general. Certainly technological innovations in water sanitation, sustainable agriculture and healthcare are far more important to the developing world than anything listed below, but are also outside the scope of this piece.)

1. The Aakash Tablet

“There are some moments in history which will be milestones recognized by future generations. This is one such moment”.

No, this isn’t Apple CEO Tim Cook talking about iCloud, iOS 5 or iPhone 4S. these are actually the words of Indian Minister of Human Resource Development, Kapil Sibal, during the recent launch of the Aakash tablet computer. The Aakash is a (very) low end 7-inch, Android 2.2 powered tablet computer targeted primarily at India’s students and rural poor (India has the world’s second biggest population). The tablet is certainly no “iPad killer”, sporting a resistive-touch screen, 256 MB of RAM, 2GB internal memory, a paltry 366MHz processor, and 800×480 display. Yet this all comes into perspective when you hear the Aakash’s price: $35.

For $35, this tablet actually packs some serious bang for the buck. It uses compression technology to shift processing during web browsing to the cloud to make up for the slow processor and can run many different document and multimedia formats (full list of specs here) It also has access to hundreds of thousands of Android apps. Not too shabby for the price of a nice dinner out here.

It is worth noting that the $35 price target of the Aakash is due to a subsidy by the Indian government to make it more affordable to Indian citizens. The actual price the Aakash government pays is $50. This price is determined based on bulk purchasing by the government and the listed price it will sell for on the regular market is around $60.

UK and Canada-based DataWind manufactures the tablet and states that higher-end models will eventually be launched in United Kingdom and United States.

Yet Sibal is unambiguous in his view as to whom the Aakash is intended: “Today we reach to the sky and demonstrate what is possible. Let me send a message, not just to our children but the children of the world: This is for all those who are marginalized”.

The Aakash is technology for the masses, not the classes. It is a rare success story where the efforts of government and private industry have converged to bring technology and information to the traditionally disenfranchised. It may not be pretty but, at $35, it doesn’t have to be.

2. Cheap Smartphones

As anyone with a smartphone knows, it is much more than simply a phone; it’s a mini-computer that fits in your pocket. This combination of computing and portability has huge potential for the developing world — if the phones are cheap enough. According to Wired’s Tim Carmondy:

There is a huge hunger for inexpensive mobile phones. South Africa has 92.2 mobile subscriptions for every 100 people. Tunisia has 83.3 and Algeria 92.7, against a global average of 60.8. In the global south, mobile phones aren’t displacing landlines but skipping past them. likewise, even though mobile data infrastructure in much of the world is spotty, smartphones aren’t just augmenting personal computers, but skipping right past them as a primary computing and communications device.

Jeremy Ford provides a an excellent commentary on the impact of cheap smartphones on the Kenyan market:

Earlier this year, the Chinese firm Huawei unveiled IDEOS through Kenya’s telecom titan, Safaricom. so far, this $80 smartphone has found its way into the hands of 350,000+ Kenyans, an impressive sales number in a country where 40 percent of the population lives on less than two dollars a day.

As with the Aakash tablet, Huawei keeps the price of the IDEOS down by using low-end hardware and open-source Android (2.2). While the specs can’t stand up to the iPhone 4S or other high end smartphones, they are good enough to make it work for people that otherwise wouldn’t have access to a computer.

Additionally, a Kenyan with an IDEOS (or another smartphone running Android) has access to hundreds of thousands of Android apps, many targeted specifically at the needs of the Kenyan people. by lowering the financial barrier to entry with commodity hardware and open-source software, the potential for smartphones to improve the lives of hundreds millions, if not billions, is profound.

3. Solar-powered Netbook

One of the problems with both the IDEOS and Aakash tablet is that they both have relatively poor battery lives. This can be especially problematic in rural areas without consistent access to reliable power sources, a very common issue for the targeted audiences of both devices.

This is why the Samsung Netbook NC215S is so compelling. This netbook utilizes a solar panel that covers the back of device to help it charge. According to the Samsung blog:

This panel captures energy from the sun and allows the user to recharge the battery automatically and without cost. Using about 2 hours of bright-mid-day sun, the user can charge the battery life by one hour. a fully charged battery allows up to 14 hours of usage, and the battery can be charged up to 1000 times over 3 years.

While a solar powered netbook wouldn’t do much good where I live in Portland, Oregon, it has huge potential in sunnier sub-Saharan Africa, one of Samsung’s target markets for the NC215S. Another benefit is that devices with poor battery life like the IDEOS or Aakash can be charged from the solar powered netbook via a usb connection.

Outside of the solar panel, Samsung has created a netbook that is pretty much on par with the others on the market, with an Intel Atom processor, 1 GB RAM, 10.1-inch screen and 240GB hard drive. In Kenya it sells for 35,000 Kenyan shillings, or about $355 US — still expensive for many but cheaper than a traditional laptop. The fact that it is also a portable recharging station makes it a compelling solution in countries with spotty power grids and sunny climates.

4. Rasberry Pi

The Rasberry Pi foundation is a UK charitable project that takes the concept of cheap computing to the extreme. According to the project’s website:

We plan to develop, manufacture and distribute an ultra-low-cost computer, for use in teaching computer programming to children. We expect this computer to have many other applications both in the developed and the developing world.

Our first product is about the size of a credit card, and is designed to plug into a TV or be combined with a touch screen for a low cost tablet. The expected price is $25 for a fully-configured system.

  • 700MHz ARM11
  • 128MB or 256MB of SDRAM
  • OpenGL ES 2.0
  • 1080p30 H.264 high-profile decode
  • Composite and HDMI video output
  • USB 2.0
  • SD/MMC/SDIO memory card slot
  • General-purpose I/O
  • Optional integrated 2-port USB hub and 10/100 Ethernet controller
  • Open software (Ubuntu, Iceweasel, KOffice, Python)

What this means is, for $25, inexpensive peripherals, and an Internet connection, someone can have a functional desktop computer capable of executing basic computing tasks like word processing and accessing the Web. While this would probably not be a computer to edit movies on, videos of Rasberry Pis running Quake 3 and serving as a remote desktop client demonstrate that a basic computer is more capable than one might think.

The Rasberry Pi has huge potential in education, where an impoverished school can build a computer lab for dirt cheap using Rasberry Pis and surplussed peripherals. these devices only run on ARM, meaning no Windows, but this also means that the OS and software will be open source and free. Schools can additionally utilize free productivity tools like Google Apps to make up for low-fi specs with the power of the cloud.

The Rasberry Pi will be available worldwide starting in November.

At the World’s Fingertips

It’s easy to forget sometimes how lucky we are to live in an affluent, developed nation. Even with our current economic malaise, American citizens still have it better than the vast majority of the world’s population. This is largely why we get so worked up over product launches like the iPhone 4S. We can.

Yet for most of the rest of the world, it is the technological race to the bottom, rather than the top, that excites. The nexus between commodity hardware, open-source software and cloud computing is bringing the greatest repository of information the world has ever known — the Internet — into the hands of those that have traditionally been shut out. and while it’s entertaining to watch blue shirted Apple employees hi-fiving customers as they run out of the Apple store clutching their new iPhones, it’s actually moving to see the bubbling excitement a cheap, low-fi $35 tablet brings to the Indian student at :51 in the video above.

I’m struck with how, for this young man, the significance of the technology he describes is not the object, but rather the opportunity that the object affords. Lucky for him, and hundreds of millions of others like him, the future seems ripe with such opportunity.

Ryan Tyler is a free-lance writer and educator living in Portland, Or. he has worked in the entertainment industry as well as K-12 and higher education. Griffin HELO TC RC Helicopter Review: The iPad-Controlled Chopper

Admittedly, we requested a HELO TC Helicopter review unit just to play with the iPad-controlled chopper around the office and annoy coworkers. Judging from their dirty looks, it worked on at least one front. but, is this chopper a high flyer, or should the HELO TC RC Helicopter remain grounded?

BUILD & DESIGN

The twin-rotored, indoor HELO TC helicopter sports a lightweight metal frame with a black polycarbonate body. And while the chopper looked rather feeble when I unboxed it, its design proved resilient. Despite numerous crashes into walls, floors, and a few unfortunately situated co-workers, the HELO TC maintained perfectly intact. The helicopter also features lights, which double as a basic battery gauge and make it quite the eye catcher.

In addition, an iPhone-sized Flight Deck accessory dock uses two hard rubber clips to attach to your iOS device, connecting to its 3.5mm headphone port. This is used to send control signals to the HELO via infared. For helicopter navigation, the volume must be at max and airplane mode must be turned on in order to operate the helicopter, as incoming FaceTime calls and iMessages will disturb flight performance.

The chopper ships with extra blades in case any get damaged as a result of the many crashes. also, while there is the potential the HELO TC could fly straight at a person’s eye and cause injury, it’s not lethal. to test this, we aimed the gadget repeatedly at Technology Guide editor Grant Hatchimonji, and despite several direct collisions, he sustained no bodily harm.

PERFORMANCE

Once charged up (which took less than an hour over USB), the HELO is ready for flight. in our “testing,” it took a few seconds to gain momentum, but soon the chopper began to rise with a quick thumb swipe of the on-screen throttle. all of the controls come via a free iOS app (iOS 4.0+ compatible); this includes a simple throttle slider for basic control, joystick with trim, an auto-land button and a toggle switch for the chopper’s LED lights. While some may find the joystick difficult to maneuver at first, those with patience and a nimble touch will master the reins quickly. within the app, a little searching will provide you with flying tips, a joystick/motion control toggle, pitch inversion, on-screen throttle placement and three transmission channels, in case a slew of oncoming HELO TCs are in your airspace. The app also allows users to record, store and playback successful flight plans.

Motion controls are extremely difficult to master, so we stuck with the joystick. there is also an “expert” mode that let’s users unleash the full power of the throttle, which caused our HELO to crash into the 13-foot high celing repeatedly.

Attempting to manuever the chopper through a homemade obstacle course also resulted in the HELO TC smashing into the ceiling and then plummeting quickly to the floor. after a bit of practice we were able to manage a flight time longer than 5 seconds, however getting the HELO to move forward, backward or rotate in the direction of your choosing is extremely difficult. The Griffin RC chopper flies fairly well inside a large and empty room, however.

Unfortunately, because the helicopter relies on infrared signals sent from the flight deck to control it, outdoor use can be hit or miss since the sun interferes with most infrared signals. also, the chopper is extremely light, and even the slightest breeze can throw it off.

The accessory dock requires four AAA batteries (not included) and gives no indication of the remaining power level. You are forced to guess when your chopper will go down as the app fails to provide battery feedback as well, and the HELO lights only indicate a dead or dying battery. in our testing, we were able to get about 10 minutes per full charge.

CONCLUSION

For a $50 helicopter, Griffen delivers a fun, if slightly expensive distraction. Even when it was crashing and flying out of control, we had a blast. While battery life indicator would be greatly appreciated, and perhaps an accompanying orchestra playing Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” while the chopper is airborne, the HELO TC RC helicopter is still an enjoyable gadget.

Motorola Debuts Moto ACTV Fitness System for Smartphones

Today Motorola introduced Moto ACTV, a bite-sized MP3 player that pairs with your smartphone to become what the company calls the “ultimate fitness tool.”

“Moto ACTV is like having a peronsal trainer and DJ at your side,” said Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola Mobility, at an event in new York City on Tuesday.

the device can be “docked” onto a wristband and works as a music player, heart-rate monitor, calorie calculator, distance tracker, and GPS device; when paired with a bluetooth headset, you can also take calls without breaking from your workout. Scroll down for a video demonstration from Motorola.

the music player “learns” what songs help you perform better and gets your heart rate up, Jha said. the smallest, 8GB model stores up to 4,000 songs, FM radio, and gives audio tips to keep you motivated. your workout data is stored and automatically synced at MotoActv.com. within the site you can also customize workout plans and share them on Facebook and Twitter. Lastly, the player is sweat-proof, rain resistant, and scratch-proof.

“This was really made for fitness enthusiasts…and people like me, who just want to lose a couple pounds,” Jha said.

the device is a clear competitor to other fitness accessories and apps like the FitBit and the the Nike+ system available on the iPod and iPhone platform. the Nike system sells as both a $29 add-on to various iPods and iPhones as well as a $1.99 iOS app. however, it does not include a heart-rate monitor. Garmin also sells a line of GPS-assisted fitness systems, some of which include heart-rate monitors.

MotoACTV will be available on November 18 (New York Marathon weekend) at best buy. the 8GB version costs $249, and the 16GB one goes for $299.

Video: Is iPhone Losing Its Cool Factor?

By WSJ Staff

When Mom whips out the iPhone, is it time to switch to Android?

A number of developers, trend spotters and young consumers say that Android, not Apple’s iOS, is the platform of choice, but for a variety of different reasons.

Young developers cite the relatively closed system of the iPhone app environment as their reason for programming apps exclusively for Google’s Android OS.

Trend spotters such as brand consultant Dean Crutchfield note that Android is seen among consumers as playing the underground, rebellious role against Apple–an irony given Apple’s role in creating the “technology as liberator” theme back with its “1984″ commercial for the original Mac.

Finally, younger consumers are increasingly backing Android phones.  the variety of devices, the cheaper prices and the constant device upgrades — to satisfy youth’s  “instant gratification” itch according to IDC Mobile Devices analyst Ramon Llamas–all contribute to Android’s popularity.

Between 2009 and 2011 the iPhone lost seven percent of market share in the 13 to 44 age group, but gained the same percentage of users 45 and older according to comScore.  That’s a lot of Moms rocking the iPhone.

Another reason: the last iPhone was introduced 15 months ago.  with a fifth generation iPhone hitting stores soon, Apple could regain a bit of its “cool factor.”

It may not have arrived in the summer as past iPhones did and it may not have had the version number the blogosphere was anticipating, but the iPhone 4S has made its debut. Unveiled by Apple at a Tuesday press event, the new phone bears more than a passing resemblance to the model that preceded it. But the iPhone 4S is a decidedly new device, with internal changes and software features that set it apart from the iPhones that have come before it.

With preorders now being accepted for the iPhone 4S, we take a closer look at Apple’s latest offering, answering some common questions about this new smartphone.

When can I get the iPhone 4S?

The iPhone 4S goes on sale Friday, October 14 in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, France, German, and Japan on October 14. Apple expects that number to reach 70 countries by the end of 2011.

So I better start lining up now then?

Not necessarily. Apple starts taking iPhone 4S preorders on October 7. if iPhone 4S preordering works as it has for past iOS devices like the iPad, you can go online Friday, order your iPhone, and have it delivered to your home, skipping the maddening crowd outside the Apple Store entirely. unless you particularly enjoy waiting in line, we recommend this approach.

How much will the iPhone 4S cost? what models are available?

There are six unique iPhone 4S models. That’s two colors (black and white), with three different storage sizes.

In the U.S., the 16GB models costs $199, the 32GB models costs $299, and the 64GB models costs $399—each price, of course, requires a two-year service contract.

I’ve already got an iPhone. How do I know if I’m eligible for an upgrade?

We’ve got a complete article on upgrading to an iPhone 4S, but here are the key points about checking your eligibility: Visit Apple’s website to determine whether you’re upgrade eligible. AT&T subscribers can dial *639# on their iPhones to check eligibility or go to the carrier’s upgrade website. Since the iPhone 4 debuted on Verizon just eight months ago, Verizon iPhone subscribers are not going to be eligible for an upgrade.

Why the iPhone 4S? Why not the iPhone 5?

Apple usually keeps the reasons behind some of its product development decisions pretty close to the vest, and the iPhone 4S is no exception. still, the naming convention is not too big of a surprise if you take a closer look at the relatively brief upgrade history of the iPhone product line. when it came time to replace the iPhone 3G in 2009, Apple didn’t name the new device “iPhone 4”; rather, it tacked on an S to make the iPhone 3GS. In that instance, the iPhone 3GS offered few changes to the iPhone 3G’s case—some stylistic changes to the lettering on the back of the phone, and a oil-resistant coating for the front screen were about the only exterior modifications. In the iPhone 3G-to-iPhone 3GS transition, the biggest changes occurred to the phone’s interior, and that appears to be the case with the iPhone 4S as well—hence, the name.

This phone looks the same as the iPhone 4. are there any differences on the outside?

The iPhone 4S looks a lot like the iPhone 4—in fact, it’s a dead ringer for the Verizon model of that phone. (The markings on the case of both the Verizon iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S are slightly different from the original version of the iPhone 4, and the side buttons are shifted slightly upward.) There’s one small difference between the 4S and that of the Verizon iPhone 4: a SIM card slot on the phone’s right side. Since the iPhone 4S supports both GSM and CDMA networks—we’ll explain what this means in greater detail below—all models feature a small tray along the right side of the frame for a GSM SIM card.

What are some of the changes on the inside?

For starters, the iPhone 4S has a faster processor—an Apple-built A5 chip, which also happens to be the processor that powers the iPad 2. It’s a dual-core processor (compared to the iPhone 4’s single-core A4 processor), which should mean improved performance not only for the CPU, but for graphics on the device as well.

In addition, there’s a new wireless system, featuring two antennas. The iPhone 4S switches back and forth between the two when its transmitting and receiving data. Apple says the aim is better call quality and faster download speeds. It’s clear that one reason Apple is trumpeting this new antenna system is the criticism the iPhone 4 received after media reports indicated that holding the phone on the bottom could attenuate the signal; in theory, this two-antenna approach means that in most cases holding the phone shouldn’t have any effect on your signal. (For more on this topic, see below.)

What’s more, the iPhone 4S supports a faster form of cellular data transfer. As a result, when the iPhone 4S is connected to cellular towers that support that transfer method, the maximum download speeds can be impressive. Apple claims the iPhone 4S’s maximum cellular transfer speeds are 5.8Mbps for uploads and 14.4Mbps for downloads; that’s the same maximum upload speed as the iPhone 4, but the rated maximum download speed on that phone was only 7.2Mbps.

So the iPhone 4S is faster than the iPhone 4?

Apple certainly says it is. at Tuesday’s event, Apple senior vice president of worldwide product marketing Phil Schiller said the iPhone 4S should offer CPU performance that’s twice as fast the iPhone 4, and seven times faster graphics performance. We’ll have a better idea of how this translates to real-world performance once we have an iPhone 4S in hand and can run some tests.

What about battery life?

Apple is promising eight hours of talk time on 3G, 14 hours of talk time on AT&T’s EDGE network, six hours of 3G browsing, nine hours of Wi-Fi, ten hours of video, and 40 hours of listening to music. The key number there is the 3G talk time—it’s an hour improvement over what Apple claimed for the iPhone 4. The reason? The A5 is a more power-efficient chip, Apple says. again, this is something we plan on testing once the iPhone 4S arrives.

I read reports about trouble with the iPhone 4’s signal strength when it came out last summer. Did Apple do anything to fix the problem with the iPhone 4S?

Yes and no. You did indeed see reports about alleged issues with the iPhone 4’s antenna—namely, that a measurable drop in signal could occur if you touched the iPhone in a specific spot.

Apple addressed the issue at a press event last July, explaining that all smartphones can suffer from signal attenuation when you touch them in certain spots. The company also clarified that iPhones had, until that time, displayed signal strength incorrectly, and the company issued a software update to address that issue. Apple also offered early iPhone 4 adopters free bumper cases, which alleviated the signal drop issue. In practice, though, few iPhone 4 customers ever noticed real-world problems from the supposed antenna issue—small comfort if you were one of those few, we realize.

As we’ve mentioned, the iPhone 4S features a new antenna design. On the original iPhone 4, touching the phone at the antenna seam on the lower left side of the device could cause the signal drop. we won’t know precisely where, or if, we’ll see signal attenuation is on the iPhone 4S until we get our hands all over one.

The iPhone 4 comes in CDMA and GSM versions. Is that the case for the iPhone 4S as well?

The iPhone 4S is a world phone, meaning its internals support both CDMA and GSM networks. so you can buy any iPhone 4S you’d like, and it will work on the supported network of your choosing—AT&T’s, Sprint’s, Verizon’s, or international carriers that support those standards.

It’s a significant change, particularly for world travelers. with the iPhone 4, globetrotters were inclined to purchase the AT&T/GSM-compatible model because that network standard is more prevalent outside the U.S. now, a customer who signs up with Verizon and its CDMA-based network will be able to travel overseas more easily—when they’re in a country that adheres to the GSM standard, their iPhone 4S will still be able to connect to that network and just work. (Provided you’ve signed up for an international roaming plan with your carrier, of course.)

So I’ll be able to buy an iPhone 4S with AT&T and then switch over to Verizon later, right?

You might think that you’d be able to move from carrier to carrier since the iPhone 4S can access both GSM and CDMA networks, but it’s not that simple—not even if your contract with one carrier expires. A closer look at Apple’s fine print uncovers this passage: “The iPhone model you purchase is subject to your wireless service provider’s policies, which may include restrictions on switching service providers and roaming, even after conclusion of any required minimum service contract.”

iPhones sold with two-year contracts are “locked” to a particular carrier. There’s some dispute about whether you’re allowed to unlock the phone when your carrier contract lapses, but it generally is not something the carriers or Apple want to talk about. It’s complicated. The short answer is, don’t buy an iPhone 4S expecting that you will be able to freely move from one carrier to another. Expect to commit to a carrier and stick with it.

Are there any other carriers offering service for the iPhone 4S besides AT&T and Verizon?

Indeed. Sprint is the third U.S. carrier to get the iPhone, and in fact will carry both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. Note that Sprint, like Verizon, has a CDMA-based network.

The iPhone 4 is still available? Why?

It’s still a great phone. Apple now has a history of keeping previous generations of iPhones available for purchase when new models are released. You can grab the iPhone 4 (the 8GB model only) for $99 with a two-year contract. You can even get the 8GB iPhone 3GS—yes, it’s not dead yet!—for free with a two-year contract. if you’re looking to save some money and aren’t yet on the iPhone bandwagon, both phones are fine alternatives to the iPhone 4S—though of course they lack many of its features.

What’s new with the camera?

Plenty. The iPhone 4S’s rear-facing camera is 8 megapixels. (The Phone 4 offers a 5-megapixel camera). The camera also boasts an improved custom lens and a wider f/2.4 aperture to allow in more light—that should provide brighter colors and better lowlight performance. Apple says you can print 8.5-by-11-inch iPhone 4S photographs, and that they’ll be literally pixel-perfect.

The camera also leverages an image signal processor that’s part of the A5 chip that powers the phone. Apple claims that the processor rivals the ones you might find in DSLR cameras. That processor, Apple says, should help you take pictures faster, with more vivid colors and better white balance. The processor also helps focus and balance exposure as you snap photos, with the ability to detect up to ten faces in a group shot.

What about shooting video—has that changed at all?

Yes. The iPhone 4S’s rear-facing camera can now shoot HD video at much higher resolution than the iPhone 4. The previous model was limited to 720p (1280 by 720 pixels) while the 4S shoots up to 1080p (1920 by 1080 pixels), and still at 30 frames per second. Be aware that those 1080p videos will also take up a lot more room on your iPhone and computer if you download them for keeping.

Do those changes affect the front-facing camera as well?

Sadly, no. The front camera is the same, lower-resolution VGA camera that’s on the iPhone 4. so both photo and video quality remain the same as before.

I keep hearing about something called Siri. what does it do?

Whatever you tell it to.

But seriously, Siri is a voice-command feature built into the iPhone 4S that responds to natural-language requests. Siri can even speak to you.

You trigger Siri by pressing and holding the Home button for a second or two. Then, you can ask Siri questions or provide instructions. It’s easiest to understand just what Siri can do by reading a sample exchange that Apple says Siri could conduct:

You: Is it going to be chilly in San Francisco this weekend?

Siri: Not too cold. maybe down to 61 degrees in San Francisco.

You: what about Napa Valley?

Siri: Doesn’t seem like it. it won’t get below 68 degrees.

Siri is more than just a talking weather widget, though. You can give Siri commands, like scheduling a meeting at 4 p.m.; if you’ve already got a meeting scheduled at that time, Siri will alert you verbally about the conflict. You can also tell Siri to remind you to do something when you get home or leave work, using iOS 5’s Reminders app. Since you can tell Siri about important people or places in your life (“my wife,” “work”), it can understand what contact or address you mean when you use such terms.

Siri can announce new notifications as they arrive (“New email from Dan Moren”), read those messages aloud, and transcribe (and send) a reply that you dictate, all through speech commands.

Though separate from Siri, it’s also worth noting that the iPhone 4S includes transcription services anywhere you can use the virtual keyboard. Tap the new microphone icon, and the phone starts listening. when you finish speaking, the iPhone 4S quickly sends your recording out to Apple’s servers, which then send the transcribed text back. The whole process takes just seconds.

If I don’t upgrade to an iPhone 4S, I’ll still be able to use Siri when I get the iOS 5 update for my current phone, right?

So far, Apple has said that only the iPhone 4S will include Siri functionality. You can upgrade your iPhone 4 or 3GS or your iPad to iOS 5, but for the moment, Siri is limited to the iPhone 4S. interestingly, Apple is calling the initial release of Siri a “beta,” and the company hasn’t clarified whether the 4S requirement is a hardware limitation. if Siri simply requires the iPhone 4S’s A5 processor, it’s not hard to imagine the functionality could one day come to the iPad 2, which includes the same chip. Given that the Siri app on which Siri is based works on the iPhone 4, perhaps that model may even get the feature eventually—though we wouldn’t bet on it. But we just don’t know for sure.

Will my current accessories work with the iPhone 4S?

Because the iPhone 4S has almost exactly the same form as the iPhone 4, most accessories compatible with the 4 will also work with the 4S. As we mentioned earlier, the 4S appears to have the same layout for the volume buttons and Ring/Silent switch as the Verizon (CDMA) iPhone 4, so some early iPhone 4 cases designed for the AT&T (GSM) model might not fit those controls perfectly. But newer cases, as well as those designed for the Verizon iPhone 4, should fit the iPhone 4S fine. We’ll be testing the iPhone 4S with other accessories, so stay tuned for further updates.
