8 GB iPhone 3GS is free, Monday only at Best Buy

as expected, best Buy is having an in-store fire sale today, Monday August 22 only, on the 8 GB iPhone 3GS. The 3GS is available for free which is the perfect price for someone who absolutely wants an iPhone, but doesn’t want to pay up front for a handset.

be aware that this deal requires a two-year customer agreement with a $325 termination fee and a monthly data charge, so there are some hidden costs associated with this free handset. if you’re not ready to commit to the 3GS for two years, you can always check out Auntie’s advice on finding a low-cost, off-contract iPhone 3GS and pairing it with a cheap PAYG plan with data.

And yes, the 3GS is a two-year old model, but it’s still a worthy handset. it sings along on iOS 4 and can handle iOS 5 just fine. There are some limitations, like no FaceTime support, but it’s perfect for the budget conscious consumer looking to experience the iOS platform with minimal cost.

HP: TouchPads Sold Out, But ‘More Coming’

It was a big weekend for HP, but for all the wrong reasons. Shoppers overloaded the HP servers and rushed to their local Best buy stores in the hopes of nabbing a TouchPad tablet at rock-bottom prices. but unfortunately for HP, it was just getting rid of existing inventory; those discounts are not likely to help its bottom line.

“All this clamoring for the TouchPad, kind of bittersweet,” Bryna Corcoran, HP’s social media manager, tweeted last night. “For those of you who end up with one in the end of all this, I want tweets and pics of how much you love it b/c I know you will.”

Late Friday night, news broke that HP was selling its TouchPads at a heavy discount: $99 for the 16GB and $149 for the 32GB. By Saturday, Corcoran tweeted that all TouchPads were sold out in the U.S., though she said there were “more coming.” the company set up a Web site that allowed customers to sign up and be alerted when more were available.

But that doesn’t mean HP is hard at work making new tablets. “Regarding ‘next batch’ coming in.. it’s called a warehouse. no more being made, but have inventory coming from ones already manufactured,” she said.

“HP getting more early this week,” she said, though she did not know how many.

Apparently people are getting testy about their TouchPads. “PLS, if you call hp stores 2morrow re: #Touchpad be kind and patient with your fellow man. #overloaded,” Corcoran tweeted. If you get a message about HP being unable to process your order that instructs you to contact a representative, that means “PLS DON’T CALL & overload staff,” she said.

HP was selling the TouchPads through two channels: its SMB Store and via its Home and Home Office. Corcoran warned that they have “separate inventory, different process.” some of those who purchased via the SMB site were charged incorrectly, but Corcoran said buyers will be credited.

How do you know if your TouchPad is on the way? Cocoran said chances are good if you were charged for the TouchPad, got an order number email, and received a final confirmation email. “If one of those are missing (see prev. tweet) then you are backordered and have to hope for the best when more come in,” she wrote.

Best buy, meanwhile, is sold out online and in stores and will not be receiving any more inventory. You could, however, drown your sorrows with a free iPhone 3GS. Best buy is offering a one-day discount for those who purchase the 8GB version on AT&T.

The TouchPad is also available on the Barnes & Noble Web site, though some shoppers are saying that it’s already sold out (Update: TouchPad sold out on B&N, with some users reporting cancelled orders due to demand). the TouchPad also jumped to the top of Amazon’s best-selling tablets list.

What’s all the fuss? HP shocked the tech community on Thursday when it announced plans to pull the plug on support for webOS devices, including the TouchPad. Despite the largely positive reviews, the tablet just couldn’t compete with the likes of the iPad and HP ditched the device after less than two months on the market. At $399, the tablet wasn’t a compelling offer; at $99, though, where do I sign up? the main drawback is the lack of apps; about 300 at launch. that isn’t likely to change with the demise of webOS, but if hackers and enthusiasts are able to come up with a way for the TouchPad to run Android, it could be a different story.

Counterpoint: The iPad is the 'third device' I'd hoped for

“After years of watching the masses fawn over the iPad […], I still can’t ever imagine myself investing in one, let alone actually using one in place of a smartphone or laptop.” So said Darren Murph on our sister site Engadget in a piece entitled, “Editorial: tablets aren’t the ‘third device’ I’d hoped for… from a productivity standpoint, anyway.” Murph focuses on the “awkwardness and limitations” of using a tablet device, and I can understand his perspective, even if I don’t agree with it.

Murph emphasises that his post is all about his personal preferences; what follows is my counterpoint, built from my personal preferences and those of my fellow TUAW writers. I’m not out to put a “hit” on Murph by any means, because even though I disagree with him in this instance, I’ve got nothing but respect for him.

As the Guinness record-holder for “world’s most prolific blogger,” it’s no surprise that Murph focuses on productivity tasks. I don’t dispute the fact that for his particular edge case, the iPad might not be what he’s looking for. but the tone of his piece kind of makes it sound like he’s saying the iPad isn’t suited to productivity tasks at all, that the need for a device like it is something that’s “manufactured” rather than real. This sounds vaguely similar to the traditional arguments against the Mac: “Why pay that much more when I can get a PC that does the same thing for $500 less? you Apple freaks are just drinking the Kool-Aid.” plus, his assertion that he “can’t ever imagine myself investing in one, let alone actually using one in place of a smartphone or laptop” sounds precariously close to the point of view of someone criticising the iPad without having used one for any appreciable length of time. Reading the rest of Murph’s piece clearly shows that’s not the case, but it’s still a surprising viewpoint.

Murph’s experience doesn’t match up with my own at all. I’ve barely used my iPhone since getting an iPad 2, and up until the release of OS X Lion, I hardly used my Mac, either. It’s only once OS X Lion made my Mac more “iPad-like” that I started using it more; before that, literally days could go by where I never even woke up my Mac.

Murph claims that “Tablets, for whatever reason, seem to defy logic when it comes to purchase rationalization in the consumer electronics realm.” I disagree. My own decision to purchase an iPad came about after my Mac spent a couple weeks in the shop and I had to rely upon my iPhone as my only computer. I found that the iPhone was able to replicate much of the functionality I was getting from my Mac, but its 3.5-inch screen felt very restrictive. the derisive characterization of the iPad as “just” a big iPod touch turned out to be exactly what I needed.

“People are just buying these things in a fit of hysteria,” Murph says. “Does anyone actually know why this ‘third device’ is such a necessity?” Sure. Here’s my “purchase rationalisation.” I wanted an immensely portable, light, small device with stellar battery life that I could shove into a small day pack and forget about until I needed it. I wanted an OS that was lightweight and streamlined enough to perform swiftly despite the comparatively anaemic power of the hardware it ran on. I wanted a hardware/software platform that was flexible enough to adapt to my needs, rather than me having to adapt to its needs. I wanted a device that I could carry into the kitchen, or the bathroom (yup), or on a hiking trip, or to the beach, or on a transcontinental trip, without feeling like I was throwing my back out every time I picked it up.

Murph might say that what I really wanted was a netbook or similar ultraportable, but he’d be wrong. I’ve used netbooks. they suck. the only advantage they hold over the iPad is the physical keyboard, but even then, the netbook keyboards I’ve used have made me want to throw them across the room after only a few minutes. Using a netbook also would have meant using either Windows, an OS I despise, or Linux, an OS with very poor integration with Mac OS X.

At its heart, the iPad is to OS X what the iPod was to iTunes: a condensed, ultraportable version of its bigger brother. rather than getting a huge backpack and schlepping my giant 17″ MacBook Pro everywhere like I used to, I can leave the Mac at home and take a lightweight, smaller device with me instead. Sure, my Mac is easier to type on, and photo/video editing are much easier in OS X than they are in iOS, but if I’m going on a two-week trip away from home, I can guarantee you my iPad will come along while the Mac will stay behind.

My iPad is portable in a way that my MacBook Pro never has been and never will be. I take my iPad everywhere, while my MacBook Pro, despite being a “portable” computer, hangs out in the lounge about 99% of the time. if my Mac is asleep when I need to look something up or bang out a quick email, I go for the iPad. When I want to sit down and chill rather than juggling five things at once like I do during the busier days at TUAW, I go for the iPad. When I travel, the Mac stays home and the iPad comes with me.

Murph claims that smartphones can do many of the things the iPad can do, and I don’t dispute that. It’s hard to think of many things that my iPad 2 can do that my iPhone 4 can’t. but the extra screen real estate does help quite a bit. I type roughly 150 percent faster on my iPad than I do on my iPhone, navigating through web pages is much easier, and viewing photos or videos on the iPad’s 9.7-inch screen feels much less confining than on the iPhone’s comparatively tiny screen. despite the fact that I can edit movies or photos on the iPhone, I’ve not done it very often precisely because the screen is so tiny — an encumbrance I don’t have to deal with on the iPad. As for writing, I wouldn’t dream of writing a post this long on my iPhone, but writing it on my iPad hasn’t been an issue at all.

you read that right: I composed this entire post on my iPad, from start to finish. This is far from the first one, either. if you go back through my post archives, I challenge you to figure out which posts I wrote on my Mac versus which ones I wrote on my iPad. Good luck, because I don’t even remember myself.

“I also can’t seem to grok the value in spending half a grand on something with a souped-up mobile OS,” Murph says. This is part of the problem a lot of people have had with the iPad thus far — the “it’s just a big iPod touch” mentality. It’s true that iOS doesn’t have the menu- and window-driven interface of OS X or Windows, but for the kind of work I find myself doing on the iPad, I don’t miss that stuff anyway. Working on the iPad feels less like a “souped-up” iPhone and more like working on a Mac that’s designed to be the ultimate word in portability. True, for just a few more ounces and a few more dollars I could get an 11-inch MacBook Air, but even if I had one of those, would my wife and I use it to watch The Office in bed? Would I use it to peruse my grocery lists at the store? Would I monitor the TUAW posting queue from the middle of nowhere? Based on my historical usage, I’m going to say no.

In my case, and in the case of several of my fellow TUAW staffers, the iPad has been a powerful supplemental tool rather than an outright replacement for the Mac. And I haven’t had to “invest a couple hundred in accessories to make it halfway useful,” either. I contemplated getting a Bluetooth keyboard until I figured out I was typing plenty fast enough on the touchscreen — it takes practice, but it does happen. I’ve had meetings with clients where I considered bringing my Mac, or debated buying the VGA adapter so I could hook my iPad into a projector, but for one-on-one meetings there really is no substitute for being able to sit next to someone and show them what’s going on as it happens.

I’m not going to write War and Peace on this thing, and if I wrote as many posts as Murph does on any given day, I’d probably be all-Mac, all-the-time. but in terms of what many of us at TUAW have used it for, the iPad has turned out to be the perfect fit. It’s not the ideal device for productivity tasks, but then again, neither is a “real” computer. put the two together, however, and you’ve got the most powerful combination since chocolate met peanut butter.

Google removes eBook purchasing on iPad and iPhone

Google has removed the ability for iPhone and iPad users to purchase eBooks in the Google Books app due to Apple’s demand for a 30 percent cut of all in-app purchases.

Apple and Google are feuding on new turf. Google Books users  on the iPhone and iPad can no longer buy books from within the app. Phandroid reports that the search giant emailed iPhone and iPad users of its Google Books app, informing them that they can no longer purchase and download new eBooks due to Apple’s in-app billing policies, which require publishers to give the Cupertino company 30 percent of every item (such as a book) purchased while in an iOS application. While this story hasn’t been widely reported, we were able to confirm that you cannot purchase eBooks in the Google Books store anymore.

Users can still read Google Books they’ve purchased on the Web or an Android device, but nothing more. this is similar to Amazon’s move with its Kindle app, which also removed in-app book purchasing after Apple began mandating its 30 percent cut. other content publishers and stores had similar issues earlier this year. this is likely because Amazon (and maybe Google) charges its own 30 percent fee to publishers, a fee it doesn’t appear ready to end.

Though Google has begun pushing in-app billing for Android, it is not mandating a slice of the pie, yet. With its current outrage over Apple’s policies, we hope that the Android Market never requires a 30 percent cut of in-app sales. Unlike Apple’s store, such a predatory move by Google would likely drive users to competing app stores like Amazon’s, further fragmenting the Android experience.

Reassurance Next to Your Windshield – HispanicBusiness.com

OnStar, now available on non-G.M. cars in a rearview mirror package, is a seamless brew of cellular, Bluetooth, GPS, microphone, speakers and human operators that offers great safety features. Most people probably do not think of General Motors as the living definition of a technologically nimble company. But deep in the G.M. archipelago of cars, parts and wholly owned subsidiaries, there sits a technological gem: OnStar. OnStar is a seamless brew of cellular, Bluetooth, GPS, microphone, speakers and human operators. Its feature list includes elements aimed at both safety and convenience. For example, if you crash, sensors wirelessly alert a 24-hour call center staffed by 2,000 OnStar operators. they immediately talk to you over the built-in speaker. if you do not respond, or if you say something like “My legs are broken in six places,” they automatically send an ambulance. they know exactly where to send it; they can see where you are; and they know what kind of car you are driving. According to OnStar, 4.5 million G.M. owners so far have liked their free six-month OnStar trial so much that they signed up to pay for it. For 15 years, you could get OnStar only in a G.M. car. Now, however, OnStar is available as a rearview mirror that goes into almost any car. It is called the OnStar FMV, which, we are told, stands for “for my vehicle.” The OnStar FMV, which is available only in the United States, may be the world’s most useful rearview mirror, but it is probably also the most expensive: $300 plus installation. For my testing, OnStar loaned me a Toyota Camry with the mirror preinstalled. (That is right. G.M. gave me a Toyota.) After the installation, an unobtrusive wire runs up the windshield from the mirror, around the door molding and down to a control box. The mirror itself looks great, at least from the front; only a few nicely integrated buttons distinguish it from the original mirror. from the back or the side, you can see that it is chunked up with internal components. Drivers in the United States also have to sign up for the service, which costs $200 or $300 a year, depending on the features you want (more on this in a moment). You can also pay monthly: $19 or $29. clearly, OnStar imposes what you might call a superdeluxe, premium fee. Fortunately, for that, you get a superdeluxe, premium product. Every plan includes the famous Automatic Crash Response — that business about OnStar reps’ calling you when you are in an accident. The sole difference is that the “embedded” OnStar system (built right into G.M. cars) also knows if your airbag went off, if your car overturned, how fast you were going and which way and whether or not the car got hit more than once. FMV, on the other hand, knows about your crash solely from the motion sensor in the mirror. That does not seem as good, but what do I know? What I could test was the human operator function. as you are driving, you can press the OnStar button for an immediate connection with a live operator. These operators are well-trained, personable and sensitive to the fact that you are probably in a car and in a hurry. You can ask them all kinds of things. You can ask for the nearest gasoline or cash machine, a weather report, an address or a phone number. You can get roadside assistance when you run out of gas, get a flat tire or need a tow. But best of all, you can ask for directions. it is amazing. You press the OnStar button. You hear a couple of rings on the speaker, and then your call is answered in 15 or 30 seconds. “Hi, this is Phoebe. Where can OnStar take you today?” “Oh, hi. I need directions to LaGuardia Airport.” “All right, sir, I’m looking that up for you. Got it. O.K., I’m sending those instructions to your vehicle.” “O.K., great! Thanks.” “Thank you, sir. have a great day, O.K.? and drive safe!” Eight seconds later, your mirror starts talking to you. “Directions are now being sent to your vehicle. Your destination is 47 miles away. Your approximate travel time is 1 hour, 7 minutes. Start out going north on Chicken Hill Road.” And now it is just like having a Garmin GPS unit — same voice, same quality of directions — except there is no screen and no map. That means you do not get the ability to spot alternate routes visually, and you do not really know where you are. On the other hand, audio-only means you can keep your eyes on the road, you can “program” the GPS while you are driving, and you never have to specify your starting location or direction. it is a soothing, satisfying thing having a human lifeline one button-press away. it is easy to see why people get hooked. The mirror also acts as a voice-controlled speakerphone. it either pairs with your existing cellphone over Bluetooth, or you can pay (heavily) for cellular service — for example, $40 a month for 100 minutes. That is right: you can now be the first on your block to have a rearview mirror with a cellphone number. The $200 a year plan gets you emergency services only. The $300 plan adds unlimited driving-direction, information and lonely heart calls. OnStar notes that during natural disasters like floods and hurricanes, it opens all of its services to all OnStar customers. OnStar, in short, is just incredibly well done. it is efficient and reliable. it is not nearly as overwhelming as car computer systems like Ford Sync or BMW iDrive. Its operators are not the usual sullen, get-off-my-lawn drones of the customer-service ilk. they are bright, interested and people-oriented. Of course, there are plenty of reasons not to get OnStar FMV. it is expensive. You could duplicate some of its functions with a suction-cup GPS unit and a Bluetooth dashboard cellphone system. and at this point, there are a few car models it still does not work with. Note, too, that the FMV’s plans cost the same as the embedded OnStar plans, but you do not get as many features. The embedded OnStar for G.M. cars also gives you Remote Door Unlock (the agents can remotely unlock your car), Vehicle Diagnostics (reports on the car’s major operating systems), Stolen Vehicle Slowdown, Remote Ignition Block and an iPhone/Android navigation app. But one thing is for sure: if you can afford OnStar FMV, you will love it.

Mark Newman’s interior designs push creativity

“Designing furniture and composing music seem related to me, in that you’re so completely engaged in the creative process,” says Mark Newman of his seemingly disparate careers – first in music and now in interior design.

After studying vocal performance and working in music for a decade – including singing with the Houston Grand Opera, Opera Colorado and San Francisco Opera – Newman joined Ralph Lauren Home. he was hired while living in Denver and, upon moving to San Francisco in 1997, continued working for the company. Eight years later, having furthered his training with stints at a pair of local interior design firms, he branched out on his own ( marknewmandesign.com).

Newman – whose style can best be described as tailored, livable and contemporary – is involved in a range of projects, from a Victorian residence to a sleek VIP lounge. he is also busy developing a furniture collection and recently launched a revamped buying service for the San Francisco Design Center’s trade-only showrooms. Earlier this year, he designed his inaugural space in the prestigious San Francisco Decorator Showcase.

“I love the relationships that are built with clients and seeing how design can make such a positive difference in their everyday experiences,” he says of his work. “I also love the creative process, finding great resources and working with unusual materials.”
