Otterbox Apple iPhone 4s cases already flocking AT&T stores? – Mobiletor.com

Not long after we heard the somewhat disappointing buzz about only an Apple iPhone 4S model this year, rumor mills suggest that new Otterbox and Speck cases for the aforementioned handset have started appearing in AT&T stores. But irrespective of what the company releases and what users expect, Apple has managed to create quite a buzz in this terrain.

There are no sightings of the actual case as of yet, but leaked photographs of the packaging have let out some tidbits. the new cases which have started to appear are not drastically different from earlier ones which were seen. although, there are some minor yet noteworthy changes including the rear camera opening which has been widened a little, reports BGR. this certainly fuels rumors about an improved camera with sensor in the next iPhone, probably even an 8MP one.

According to other speculations, these cases are nothing but a refreshed batch to compensate for the prior lot meant for the iPhone 4, which had to be returned due to complaints from customers regarding the LED Flash and button alignments. hopefully, there will be a final answer to all assumptions from the company’s side soon, if the alleged October 4 event sees a release of a host of new devices by the new CEO Tim Cook.

Whatever the case, these new accessories easily diminish the chances of a brand new iPhone 5, or even a highly revised iPhone 4S.

iOS 5 Debuts Wednesday, Release Time Likely 1 p.m. EDT – International Business Times

The upgrade comes with a dazzling lineup of 200 new features including the Notification Center, the Newstand, iMessage, Twitter integration and wireless syncing.

The update aims to separate the iDevice from the PC, making it “PC Free.” Any iOS 5 device can be operated entirely without a computer, finally turning the iPad into a true netbook contendor.

To install iOS 5 on your current device, simply connect it to Mac or PC and follow a set of instructions in iTunes. once the update is complete, you won’t need to plug it into computers ever again, as iOS 5 is totally device independent.

The iOS 5 comes with 1500 new APIs and 200 new features. among them are the following updates:

Improved Notifications System – “Scaled beautifully,” the new push notifications system is no longer annoying or obtrusive and will be displayed on the lock screen together with stock and weather alerts.

News Stand – Similar to iBooks, News Stand will be dedicated to magazines and newspapers.

Improved Mobile Safari – the mobile Web browser now comes with a tabbed browsing feature even as the Safari Reader allows users to quickly save stories for later reading in the Reading List.

Reminders – the new Reminders app in iOS 5 now makes it possible to maintain multiple lists and save them with dates to alert you. Reminders has geolocation capabilities i.e. it can send reminders to users based on user location.

Camera – the camera can now be accessed faster as it gets a shortcut on the lock screen. To access, double tap the home button and then tap the camera icon. for taking photos, simply tap the volume up button. Other new camera features include crop and rotate, edit, red eye reduction, auto focus and auto exposure, and auto enhance (using iPhoto).

Mail – the new Mail feature in iOS 5 has seen some significant changes. It now comes with rich text formatting message flagging and draggable addresses. Now entire messages can also be searched.

There are also keyboard enhancements: Now it’s possible to drag the keyboard up, split the keyboard (to make it more ergonomic). the size of the keyboard can also be reduced to facilitate thumb-typing.

PC Free Function – the iOS 5 is “PC free” i.e. now there’s no need to hook up mobile Apple devices with PC to access iTunes. iOS updates are now possible over the air. An iTunes library can also be synced wirelessly via Wi-Fi. iTunes sync is now automatic and possible even while an iOS device is being charged.

Delta updates are also available i.e. software updates are now over the air and you can download only the necessary update and not the entire app/software.

iMessage – iMessage is perhaps the most important feature in iOS 5. the iMessage, which is only available to iOS users allows sending text and multimedia messages over Wi-Fi and 3G. It comes with read and delivery receipts and real time typing indication. the iMessages can be pushed out to all iOS devices a user owns, thereby allowing, for instance, the user to start a conversation on an iPhoneand continue the same on an iPad right where it was left off.

Twitter integration – While Android offers great Facebook integration, Apple has gone down the other social networking group and got into bed with Twitter. the result is that, once signed into the microblogging service, Twitter is available system-wide, letting you tweet links and photos from anywhere in the iDevice, and attach your current location, too. Any contacts who appear on Twitter and in your address book will be synced together, automatically attaching Twitter handles to the correct contacts.

iPhone 4S case images hit the web

We still don’t know if Apple intends to release an iPhone 5 on its own as a replacement for the iPhone 4, or combine its release with a budget-friendly iPhone 4S. but the existence of an iPhone 4S case would go a long way toward signalling that there are going  to be two new iPhones arriving this year.

Well, that’s exactly what has happened. an iPhone 4S carrying the Otterbox and Speck branding has been snapped at an AT&T store and picked up by Twitter rumor man Chronic Wire.

When placed next to the iPhone 4 case, the overall size of the phone looks to near identical. the main difference is the size of the hole left for the camera, but that has been dismissed as just an improved design for the existing LED flash. So is this a case for a new iPhone or not?

There are two explanations as to what this case could mean. the first is that the case is specifically for a new model of iPhone carrying the name iPhone 4S as evidenced by the name on the packaging (below). but if that was the case, and the new model is identical in size, why ship a new casing when the one you already supply will work?

The second explanation is probably the more likely one: Otterbox has just chosen a really unfortunate name for their new case. they do name their products “Series Cases”, so the S after the 4 could just be a shortened version of “Series.”

What do you think, is an iPhone 4S going to make an appearance on October 4?

Quick Look: moshi iVisor AG for iPhone 3GS

The moshi iVisor Anti-Glare screen protector for the iPhone 3GS is hilariously easy to install: all you do is open the package, clean your screen, align the screen protector, and then press down on the screen. It’s so easy that I actually did laugh out loud after the three second installation, since other screen protectors have taken far longer with their bubbles and squeegees and required spray bottles. Once the iVisor is on, there is really no worry about it coming off, unless you purposely tug on one of the corners.

Using the device with the iVisor is about 95% similar to having a naked screen. The 5% difference has to do with a few moments here and there where you may have to tap a little bit harder, since the iVisor is actually a rigid sheet of plastic with a small layer of air between it and the iPhone, so some taps may hit the iVisor and not the screen.

As for the optical quality: I haven’t perceived a major change in the colour or the clarity of the screen since installing the iVisor, which is actually quite surprising, since most anti-glare protectors tend to make the screen a lot fuzzier.

Installing screen protectors is usually a little stressful, since you have to worry about hair and dust and misalignments, but the iVisor makes the process almost fun in comparison. this really is one of those rare products that works perfectly right out-of-the-box and does exactly what it sets out to do, and it’s an easy recommendation for those who want scratch protection, without any fussing over easily wrinkled plastic shields.

The iVisor is available for the 3GS and the iPhone 4 for about $25 (as per this eBay listing I found). There don’t seem to be any official vendors for the 3GS version at this moment, though.

Tactical NAV Is An Indispensable Tool

AppDictions App ReviewTactical NAV combines military technology with GPS to form one powerful navigation app for the iPhone. Created by an U.S. Army officer as a resource for troops, Tactical NAV is a land navigation tool which has also been used to aid in the calling in of air strikes.

Once you location services are activated and upon launching the app, you will immediately be presented with all of the navigational resources you could want.  the expandable menu allows the user to; insert a drop point on the map which can be saved and emailed – which I have to mention as my only complaint – the app closed and email did not open when I tried emailing the drop point. This may just have been my device and I do not want to detract from how impressed we are with the app. Other tabs include the compass, camera, coordinates detailing the date, time, heading, bearing, and longitude and latitude. there is even an infrared option and you can re-calibrate the compass by waving your device in a figure 8 motion. Tactical NAV also puts military technology in civilian hands by way of integrating the MGRS grid view; which is the U.S. military’s own grid reference system. you can alter your viewing settings to display either map, satellite or hybrid view.

Coming from a bit of a military family; I shared the app with a former Army scout who remarked he would have loved to have had this while on active duty. Tactical NAV is a technologically superior app, and you may feel like a commando using it. However, it’s not just appropriate for active military personnel in the field, but for adventurers, outdoor enthusiasts, hunters, campers and the like.

AppDictions Rating:

iTunes DescriptionCreated for the troops, by the troops!  Tactical NAV is an indispensable tool. Map & plot navigational waypoints, share location and waypoint information with other Tactical NAV users by email, and even take photographs stamped with GPS coordinates.  these are just some of the tools the U.S. Military and NATO Armed Forces use to conduct combat operations on a daily basis – and now, these tools are available to YOU in Tactical NAV.

Jabra Supreme review

Jabra has a strong pedigree in Bluetooth gadgets including the stylish Jabra Stone headset and the excellent in-car Jabra Freeway speakerphone.

The Supreme is a bit different, yes it's a Bluetooth headset, but it's the first mono headset to include Active Noise Cancellation technology. We sent our Technical Manger Owen Gerrard out with the Supreme to put it to the test walking, driving and of course talking.

Bluetooth headsets are certainly not fashion accessories, but we're pleasantly pleased with the Supreme's appearance. Weighing just 18g, it hooks over your ear and the flip-boom arm (complete with volume controls) pulls out and sits alongside your cheek. It's certainly comfortable, but it's so light we were continually checking it was secure and it did almost fall out on a couple of occasions.

At around £99, the Jabra Supreme is at the pricier end of the Bluetooth headset market, so it's a shame it doesn't quite have the level of fit and finish we'd expect, there are some uneven joins of plastic, but it still feels sturdy and usable.

Pairing the Supreme with our iPhone, we tried it driving on the motorway, walking down a busy road and in the office and call quality from the 24mm speaker is outstanding; crisp and clear both for us and the people we talked to.

The Active Noise Cancelling technology used here is similar to that used in headphones such as the Bose QC3 and Sennheiser PXC 450 which works by analysing the environment and creating a sound wave to counteract and cancel out noise.

When combined with other Jabra technology like Wind-noise Reduction and Noise Blackout, it works incredibly effectively. Owen said callers reported his voice remained loud and clear – despite battling against background noise like lorries. in fact it adjusted so well to our surroundings, he didn’t need to turn the volume button up and down when we swapped between loud and quiet environments.

Even more impressive is battery life, with moderate to light use Owen got around five days, which is fantastic.

Of course the Jabra Supreme is not just for use with voice calls, you can also pair it with a computer using Bluetooth and A2DP support means you can stream music. quite why anyone would want to do this, we don't know because you are never going to get outstanding sound quality from a mono speaker.

We're really impressed with the Jabra Supreme. it is expensive, but in terms of performance it's definitely the best Bluetooth headset we've tried and effortlessly handles loud and quite situations. our only gripe is the build – we just wish it felt a bit studier. But otherwise this comes recommended.

ENERGIZER Keeps Consumers Charged Up with Expanded Line of Portable Power Products

Press Release Source: Energizer Holdings, inc. on Monday October 10, 2011, 6:14 pm EDT

ST. LOUIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Staying powered-up has become absolutely critical to our daily lives, and Energizer continues to expand its portfolio to satisfy consumers’ ongoing demand for power. the company has just announced a comprehensive new line of Energizer® Universal USB Chargers and Cables and the addition of the Energizer® Single Zone Inductive Charger to the suite of Qi-enabled products launched last year.

“We know consumers rely on devices like smart phones and tablets in a variety of different places and for different reasons, so we’re delivering a range of options that suit different devices, lifestyles and needs,” says Michelle Atkinson, Vice President of Marketing for North America. “Along with our enormously popular line of Energizer® Energi To Go® power packs, consumers can enjoy a new inductive charger in our suite of Qi-enabled products, and a selection of universal USB accessories that we think can really help make people’s lives better at work, home or on the go.”

Universal USB Chargers Make Any Outlet a Charging Station

Energizer® Universal USB Wall and Car Chargers are the must-have accessories today because they provide convenient charging of one or more devices from any standard wall outlet or from a vehicle’s DC outlet. They’re compact – the wall charger has a fold down plug and is smartly designed so that it will not block the second outlet – and they’re also affordable enough to place in multiple locations. They’re each available at two power levels: one for devices up to 5 Watts such smartphones, MP3 players and other 5W devices; one for the 10 Watt power needs of the iPad®

The Energizer® USB Chargers work with the USB cables that already come with smartphones, MP3 players and other handheld electronics. But, since many consumers also like to keep a cable at work, in a suitcase or in the car, Energizer is also offering full range of charging cables: the Energizer® Micro and Mini USB Charging Cables, which are compatible with your USB-powered devices, and the Energizer® Dock Connector USB Cable made for the iPad®, iPhone® and iPod®.

“Our insight into what consumers want and need in USB accessories resulted in smart designs and packaging that we think they’ll appreciate. They can feel confident that product performance will be exactly what one would expect from the Energizer® brand: top-notch,” adds Atkinson.

MSRPs range from $9.99 to $24.99.

Charging ahead with Qi

Adoption of Qi (pronounced “chee”) as the universal charging standard is gaining momentum as additional Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) members introduce Qi-compatible devices. As with other standards that are common across brands – such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies – Qi enables chargers and devices to communicate with one another, regardless of manufacturer.

Energizer, the first to bring a full suite of Qi-certified products to market for convenient, cord-free charging, is now offering a single-zone version of the Energizer® Inductive Charger. the company also recently introduced a Qi sleeve for the popular iPhone® 4 and others are joining the ranks. Qi-compatible accessories are now available for the Samsung® DROID ChargeTM, HTC ThunderboltTM, and the LG RevolutionTM is coming soon.

the Energizer® Single Zone Inductive Charger, a smaller version of the original which debuted in fall 2010, features a slim-line rectangle design with one charging area that can power any Qi-compatible device up to 5 Watts. This powerful, but compact, wireless charger is a great addition for wireless charging enthusiasts who prefer to have multiple charging stations in their home or perfect for those who have smaller surface spaces, or those taking the first step in to wireless inductive charging.

the dual-zone Energizer® Inductive Charger – which was named a CES Innovations 2011 Design and Engineering Award Honoree in the Portable Power category — features two large charging zones that don’t require locking the device into a precise position, and a USB port to charge a third device.

MSRP: Dual Zone Charger/$89.00; Single Zone Charger/$54.99Energizer® Inductive Charging Sleeve for iPhone® 4 and iPhone® 3GS/3G Energizer® Inductive Charging Door for BlackBerry® Curve™ 8900 (MSRP: $34.99)Energizer portable power products are available on Amazon.com.

AnandTech – Amazon Kindle (4th Gen) Review

The new Kindle fire may have gotten most of the attention when Amazon refreshed its Kindle lineup this year, but Amazon is still very much in the e-reader market. The fourth-generation Kindle, the Kindle Touch, and the Kindle Touch 3G all promise to deliver the traditional Kindle experience in a lighter and less expensive package – continue reading for our thoughts on the new $79 Kindle.

Hardware and Tech Specs

The new Kindle’s 6”, 600×800 E-Ink Pearl screen is basically the same as the previous model’s, but that’s where most of the hardware similarities end: the keyboard, a mainstay of all previous Kindles, has been removed and replaced by four physical buttons and what Amazon calls a “five-way controller,” a directional pad surrounding a button. Typing is now done using this controller and an on-screen software keyboard, which I’ll complain a bit about later.

for all the inconvenience of text entry, the keyboard’s removal does noticeably reduce the Kindle’s size and weight – the new unit is 6.5” (166mm) tall, 4.5” (114mm) wide, and 0.34” (8.7mm) deep, and weighs just a shade under 6 ounces, down from the 8.5 ounces of the previous model. As a result, it’s comfortable to hold in one hand for most extended reading sessions. Many promotional shots show it nestled in the back pocket of someone’s jeans, which you can do, even though you feel like you’re going to snap it in half when you sit down. Suffice it to say that it slides easily into most bags, cases, and purses without issue.

On the inside, the Kindle is outfitted cheaply (to hit that $79 price point) but well enough, given its intended function – the fine folks over at Blog Kindle have done a very thorough, device-bricking teardown of the Kindle so that we didn’t have to. The action is driven by a Freescale i.MX50-series Cortex A8 SoC running at 800MHz, while an Epson KCRE7000 E-ink display controller handles the visuals. an Atheros AR6103 chip provides wireless b, g, and n Wi-Fi speeds of up to 72.2 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band. 128MB of RAM from Hynix and 2GB of flash memory from Sandisk round out the rest of the Kindle’s important chips.

all of this hardware is powered by a 890mAh 3.7 V battery, which Amazon says is good for about a month, and while I haven’t had the thing for a month I can say that this sounds about right – after a week of daily usage, I’ve used about a quarter of the Kindle’s battery life. There’s no charger included in the box, but the included micro-USB cable can be connected to any computer or USB charger – the Kindle had no problem with my iPhone’s charger, and I expect that most micro-USB chargers will work without issue. Amazon also sells its own branded adapter for $10.

The basic Kindle’s 2GB of storage space (which in practice works out to be around 1.3GB after the system software) is half that of the previous generation Kindle and the forthcoming Kindle Touch, though it’s certainly as much as you need to store anything you’re actively reading. Amazon’s cloud storage lets you archive anything you’re not reading, and you can re-download it to your device in short order if you’ve got a Wi-Fi connection.

aside from Amazon’s .AZW format books, this Kindle supports TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI, and PRC files natively. HTML, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP files can all be viewed after being converted by Amazon or another program. You’ll notice that there are no audio files on this list – the low-end Kindle doesn’t support audio in any way, so audiobooks, the “read to me” text-to-speech feature, and music are incompatible with it. The Kindle Touch will include audio support when it launches in November, and the Kindle Keyboard (a rebranding of the previous-generation device) continues to support audio.

Plugging the Kindle into your PC puts it into USB drive mode, where you can charge the device and move files into its flash memory. To continue to charge the Kindle while using it normally, eject it from the computer.

Unboxing and Setup

The Kindle comes in a simple, unadorned cardboard box with “Kindle” emblazoned on the side. Open it up, and you’ll find the device and the micro USB cable nestled in an all-cardboard enclosure that should be familiar to anyone who has experienced Amazon’s “frustration free” packaging – the lack of plastic makes it both easier to open and more environmentally sound. A simple slip of cardboard tells you how to navigate with and charge the Kindle, and there’s no other manual in sight.

First-time setup is a bit of a pain, and it all comes down to the keyboard – previous Kindles have all used a smartphone-ish physical keyboard (the Kindle Keyboard continues to, of course), and forthcoming Kindles will all include some manner of touchscreen, but the base Kindle just has an on-screen keyboard and a directional pad for navigation.

you now know why no one Tweets from their Xbox 360. for the same reason, you’ll want to stay away from the included web browser for anything more complicated than a quick search – typing is just too belabored.

After connecting to my wireless network (WEP, WPA, and WPA2 are all fully supported, and once I typed in my SSID the Kindle saw my hidden network without difficulty), I found downloading books from my Kindle library to be quick and relatively painless, though again hampered by constant clicking to navigate and to type. Buying new books is best done on a PC, where Amazon will give you the option to have your titles automatically downloaded to the Kindle – you can find and purchase books on the device itself, but if you find the keyboard as painful to use as I did you’ll tend to shy away from it. To its credit, Amazon’s search suggestions list is pretty long and pretty aggressive, so you generally shouldn’t have to type the entire name of the book or author that you’re looking for.
