New iPhone 3Gs Reviews

New iPhone 3Gs Critiques

AT a glance, there is virtually no way to distinguish the iPhone 3GS from the older iPhone 3G without turning it above to see the silver fonts spelling the words “iPhone.”

Even though the two look same from the outside, the iPhone 3GS’ screen positive aspects from an oil resistant coating that tends to make it more resistant to smudges from greasy fingers.

True, it doesn’t fully get rid of all kinds of smudges, but it does make it a lot easier to clean the display.

Considerably of the new iPhone’s fundamental cellphone functions (voice calls and text messages) retain the same interface of its predecessors. Voice contact calibre is good on the 3GS and the speaker cellphone but it isn’t loud sufficient to be heard in a noisy surroundings.

Also, the quirky timeline view of text messages where the messages are stored by conversations between contacts, does take some finding employed to.

The absence of a character counter also you gives no indication whether your messages are inside the 160 character limit of a single text message.

In terms of battery performance, you can get a full day of usage out but you will surely need to have to recharge it by the finish of the day.

Of course, how long the mobile phone lasts depends on your usage. Activities like surfing on a 3G connection and playing games will swiftly drain the battery so it is ideal to handle your consumption wisely.

Speed matters

Speed is touted as the crucial improvement to the iPhone 3GS. Along with the new hardware upgrades, the iPhone 3GS now boasts significantly more swiftly speeds at literally everything it does from net browsing to launching of applications.

The general surfing experience above 3G connection was fast with most webpages we visited ready for viewing within four to 5 seconds even though it generally took 20 seconds to fully load a page.

We tried loading an image-intensive site like the homepage of Gamespot.com and discovered it took the 3GS roughly 15 seconds to completely load the world wide web site by means of 3G connection and about 30 seconds on WiFi.

Webpages generally rendered quicker on the iPhone 3GS and this was very evident when we tested zooming in and out even though navigating to view specific portions of a page.

Even launching applications like Mail, Camera, Notes and Maps was noticeably more swiftly on the iPhone 3GS. We have been evenhandedly impressed at just how fast applications launched and how we could use them the moment they booted.

Much superior gaming

The 3GS also boasts superior handling of 3D games. With a more rapidly processor and help for the OpenGL ES two. graphics common, the 3GS is undoubtedly a promising mobile gaming platform.

Indeed, there’s a noticeable distinction in the degree of efficiency when gaming on the iPhone 3GS compared to older iPhone and iPod touch models.

SLIM: the iPhone 3GS maintains the exact same standard form and layout of the iPhone 3G.

In terms of functionality, almost all video games we tested launched faster on the iPhone 3GS and ran smoother with out any dropped frames.

Case in point is Galaxy Fire, a 3D sci-fi room flight simulation that looked stunning. even the controls feel spot on with no the slightest trace, tip of holdup to compensate for.

One more game, Doom Resurrection, also carried out effectively with its fluid sweeping motions and 3D environments.

Video games that generally have long load times like Sim City have also shown functionality improvements, with quicker loading instances and smoother animation.

Snap away

The 3GS has a new constructed-in three-megapixel camera that adds autofocus and video recording to its checklist of attributes.

Autofocus is surely a welcomed characteristic and it works by means of a tap-to-concentrate interface on the camera. By tapping on the display, the camera will automatically alter focus and even the exposure for the section you tapped on. Considerably to our surprise the new characteristic even permits you to take macro shots.

For example, whether you are taking a photo of a topic with his back against a window, you can correctly set the camera to expose for the subject as an substitute of finding an underexposed shot.

Going by the image good calibre of photographs we’ve taken, the camera is evenhandedly decent for a telephone. as anticipated, external shots with lots of light looked great but items turned noticeably a lot more grainy with indoor photographs. That’s not to state the pictures taken indoors were nonsense but good calibre does requires a hit under individuals situations.

The camera records videos now and switching amongst modes is as easy as flicking a switch.

We weren’t anticipating significantly out of the 3GS’ camera but a lot to my surprise, the VGA high calibre movies looked remarkably excellent compared to most mobile telephone cameras. Movies at 30fps looked smooth and the audio high calibre was really very good too.

Sadly you can’t pause while recording videos and this is a sorely missed operate that would’ve been excellent taking into consideration there are on-board video-editing possibilities on the 3GS.

Having said that it is easy to figure out how to trim your movies down to dimension. though your editing alternatives are limited to choosing a new begin and finish to a video, it would’ve been great whether you could do far more with the editing tools.

You have to preserve in thoughts that the editing is destructive, so anything left on the slicing space floor is erased for excellent.

Discover your way

The compass is yet another new hardware addition on the 3GS that tremendously improves the device’s GPS navigation capabilities.

Discovering your way shut to is produced less difficult with the assist of this new digital compass which integrates with Google Maps to orientate the map to show the path you are at the moment facing. This drastically improves the maps’ usability producing it great for pointing by yourself in the right course when you can’t get an right GPS lock.

Admittedly, it isn’t a full-featured GPS navigation application and it lacks turn-by-turn instructions, but whether you have a fundamental sense of path, Google Maps can definitely be a valuable navigation tool.

Google Maps isn’t the only application to take benefit of the new hardware — Compass is yet another pre-installed application and it shows you which direction you are facing.

Other third-party applications that have taken benefit of the new hardware consist of Motion-X GPS, a type of all-in-1 application that blends Compass and Google Maps into one particular.

Other functions

Voice handle is another new enhancement one-of-a-kind to the 3GS that truly functions effectively. Holding down the Home button for a few seconds launches the interface, at which point the cellphone will beep to immediate you to state a command.

It is an straightforward-to-use interface with most of the keywords conveniently listed on display. We were really astonished at how amazingly accurate the voice manage was in detecting and recognising words. it even accepted non-English sounding obloquy flawlessly.

It is also a extremely practical application that comes in handy when you need to have to contact a contact and don’t have a cost-free hand like when you’re driving.

Even whether a contact has many numbers (residence, perform or mobile), voice handle will ask you to specify which amount you want to call.

The feature also extends to controlling your music as effectively. Studying out the study of an artiste or title of a song has the 3GS switch to iPod mode and plays songs you request.

Tethering is yet another welcome addition that helps make use of the phone’s 3G connection to associate your individualized individualized or notebook to the World wide web when WiFi is not available.

Even when the iPhone is tethered, you can nonetheless make or obtain calls and text messages.

The setup procedure is evenhandedly straightforward — all you require are a couple of tweaks and you can associate your pc or notebook to the 3GS by means of Bluetooth or USB.

However, in our come across using it, we found it less complicated to associate utilizing a Mac as compared to a Computer. also, the connection speed was rather slow and not swiftly enough for typical surfing. In fact it was only favourable for instant messaging.

Conclusion

For all intents and purposes the iPhone 3GS serves as a worthy update to the iPhone 3G. Talking from very first-hand knowledge, when you get employed to the generally speediness of the phone, it is tough to go back to any other gadget that performs slower.

It is the single most compelling purpose to buy an iPhone 3GS — the improved processor performance and the speed huge difference is important sufficient that it impacts net surfing and common application usage.

The addition of new hardware parts such as the digital compass also significantly improves navigation and the voice control makes it straightforward to contact contacts and control your music whilst on the go. Then there is the improved 3-megapixel camera that requires greater photographs and evenhandedly decent movies to boot.

Nevertheless the inquiries still stays whether you already individualized an iPhone 3G: “To upgrade or not to upgrade?”

While it is pretty tempting, there just is not sufficient enhancements and adjustments to justify an upgrade due to the many similarities among the 3GS and 3G.

On the other hand whether you have been inactivity to get an iPhone, there is evenhandedly small that should hold you back from obtaining a single now.

Pros: Speedy performance much superior 3D game handling camera will take great movies right voice handle.

Cons: Text message interface is nonetheless weird limited on-board video-editing choices no pause operate during video recording.

Wireless CEOs Make Nice, Ask For More Spectrum

SAN DIEGO – The nation’s wireless CEOs are locked in a vicious battle over the AT&T/T-Mobile merger, but they made thoroughly nice at today’s CTIA Wireless keynote address, praising the wireless industry’s innovation, environmental awareness, and social responsibility.

Sure, there were a few digs: Sprint CEO Dan Hesse compared AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega to Abraham Lincoln’s assassin John Wilkes Booth, while de la Vega called Hesse “the best actor in wireless.” Sprint steadfastly opposes AT&T’s purchase of T-Mobile, while AT&T argues Sprint isn’t truly interested in nationwide competition but rather in weakening AT&T.

Other than those brief digs, Hesse, de la Vega and Verizon Wireless CEO Dan Mead focused instead on noncontroversial topics on which everyone could agree. Vega went into great length about how AT&T is nurturing small mobile developers and ideas within AT&T by improving collaboration both within the company and with partners.

“In our industry the driving force that is driving the revolution and the innovation I think is going to be collaboration,” de la Vega said.

Mead also focused on “collaboration” as his theme.

“Even though the wireless industry is fiercely competitive, it’s also been able to grow and flourish because of mutual cooperation,” Mead said, mentioning roaming agreements and cross-carrier text messaging as examples of inter-carrier cooperation.

All three CEOs talked a lot about how wireless devices can improve health care, especially in terms of tele-medicine and keeping elderly people safe. Wearable technology is a major new frontier, monitoring vital signs for everyone from newborns to marathon runners, de La Vega said. AT&T ran several videos from partners producing devices from fall detectors to cars, all praising AT&T as a helpful partner.

CTIA 2011

Mead touted Verizon’s innovation centers, which bring potential device manufacturers closer to Verizon Wireless to make device development easier. He also had some videos showing off solutions in health care, transportation, energy use, and banking. Comparing the two similar videos, Verizon’s theme music is much more aggressive than AT&T’s; AT&T went into more depth about a few individual partners.

“Creative partnerships have been a key focus area for us at Verizon Wireless for the past several years,” Mead said.

Hesse, for his part, praised the cellular industry’s pursuit of environmental goals and its moves against distracted driving. U.S. wireless carriers are using more recycled plastics, they’re moving to universal MicroSD-based chargers for smartphones, and they’re dramatically increasing the number of products that are taken back for recycling, Hesse said.

“The EPA invited Sprint, along with Dell and Sony, to be the first companies to publicly commit to following a new national e-waste strategy. we have a goal to recycle 90 percent of all devices we sell by 2017, and we’re already halfway there,” he said.

CTIA CEO Steve Largent, meanwhile, repeated his frequent mantra: the wireless industry needs more spectrum if it’s going to continue to innovate. The organization is working on getting broadcasters to voluntarily give up some spectrum for auction, and wants the government to auction off some currently government-used spectrum as well, he said.

“More jobs, more growth, more spectrum is a win for America, and we’re calling on Congress to clear the air,” he said.

Largent also took a few minutes to eulogize Steve Jobs, reminding viewers that Apple is a member of the CTIA trade organization (even though the company has never exhibited at, spoken at, or even formally attended a public CTIA event).

“Steve Jobs has left a legacy of innovation and disruption in how we fundamentally communicate. The development of the iPhone is at the top of the list,” he said.

No Money for iPhone 4S? Install iOS 5 on iPhone 3GS

Sure, iPhone 4S sounds great and it is a shiny new smartphone everybody must have for so many reasons. But Adam Mills, technology writer for GottaBeMobile, demonstrates that installing Apple’s latest operating system on a two year device can work very well, despite initial concerns.

Mills took his time in testing iOS 5 on his iPhone 3GS and detailing the experience. The installation is a bit slow and nerve consuming but, after that, the iPhone 3GS’ performance is above expectations.

Once the upgrade is finished, some apps might miss. if that happened, the first recommended step is to plug the iPhone to the computer and to sync in order to get back the deleted apps from the computer. However, if this still doesn’t resolve the problem, there are additional suggestions from GottaBeMobile “To download your apps from the iTunes App Store again, you need to open up the App Store on your device. Tap on the purchased Tab at the bottom of the App Store. on this page, you can manually install all the apps you have purchased and installed in the past.”

After all is set and done, iOS 5 seems to work just fine, according to Mills. for the average user, Mills claims the iPhone experience to be improved significantly with the upgrade. no sluggish performance, no unusual battery drain to spoil the fun while new features become available. Notifications worked properly and iMessage got applause. The new options for the camera and Photo Stream were put to the test as well and didn’t disappoint.

For many users the convenience of iOS 5 working well on a older model iPhone meant that they can skip iPhone 4S in the anticipation for the already rumoured iPhone 5.

iPhone App Video Review: Fruit Ninja: Puss In Boots – iPhone app article – Andrew Koziara

Dreamworks has enlisted the aid of THQ and Halfbrick Studios, the iOS developers that need no introduction, to bring us an iOS tie-in game for Puss in Boots, which hits theaters in late October. that game is Fruit Ninja: Puss in Boots.

No doubt it’s better than whatever tie-in game gets shoveled onto store shelves for the consoles, so we can take comfort in that at least. this is the same Fruit Ninja that you all know and love with a new coat of paint and an excellent new game mode. Classic mode has been re-dubbed Desperado, and features the same three life limit and bomb avoidance fun. except now, to regain a life, rather than score one hundred points you’ll have to slice the magic bean, which results in a point bonus if you’re full on lives.

The new mode is called Bandito, and is something of a gauntlet challenge. at each level, four challenges will be randomly selected. you simply have to get through the three levels to the final bonus stage without failing three challenges, thus losing your three lives. The challenges range from cracking open a tough coconut to picking fruit out of swarms of bombs. you are scored and rated based on how many fruits you sliced, the accuracy of your slices, and your initial reflex time. Bandito mode offers lots of variety, and it’s a whole new way to play your favorite fruit slicing game.

Other than Banditio mode, this is really just old school Fruit Ninja with a Puss in Boots wrapper. There are cool new blades and backgrounds to unlock, new music, and now Puss himself will occasionally chime in with comments about your performance. I can’t think of a single thing that wouldn’t benefit from the addition of Antonio Banderas’ dreamy voice and suave demeanor, and this game is no exception. it may be full of elements from the movie, but it isn’t drowning in them and it manages to retain its own identity. There are plenty of new OpenFeint and Game Center achievements to unlock and leaderboards to climb, and the game can be yours for a dollar. If you love Fruit Ninja, you’ll continue loving it here, and if you don’t love Fruit Ninja, there’s probably something wrong with you.

New iPhone 4S: Antenna ‘Death Grip’ Now Slightly Harder

Apple has changed the antenna in the new iPhone 4S so that the cellular radio in the phone can choose between two antennas, depending on which one is sending or receiving signal best. These two antennas are part of the stainless steel band that wraps around the sides of the iPhone 4 and the new 4S. On the iPhone 4 this band is split up into several antennas so that one piece does Wi-Fi, another does GPS, another does Bluetooth and still another does cellular.

But on the new iPhone 4S, the (GSM) cellular antenna is divided up into two pieces. So if you apply the death grip to attenuate to one piece of the cellular antenna, the radio will, in theory, switch to the other piece that isn’t being gripped. So you’ll have have to apply a Double Death Grip (see image) to squelch off cellular service to the new phone completely. that move is usually seen only on Star Trek and in pro wrestling rings.

But there’s more: the new 4S is a “world phone,” meaning that it contains both a GSM radio and antenna and a CDMA radio and antenna inside. obviously the “antenna band” running around the phone is being cut into smaller and smaller sections. How this will impact reception/transmission of the various wireless signals is yet to be seen.

“Improving on the innovative stainless steel external, dual-antenna design of iPhone 4, iPhone 4S is the first phone to intelligently switch between two antennas to send and receive,” the press release reads. Actually, the new antenna concept is nothing new at all–it’s just new in consumer handsets. such “diversity” antenna systems have been used in other types of wireless devices for years.

The network engineer and the antenna engineer I spoke to yesterday after the 4S announcement yesterday both said that the new antenna design is likely to produce only modest reception gains. One engineer got the distinct impression that the new antenna part of the 4S announcement yesterday was more about hype than anything else.

These are opinions of course; we won’t pass official judgement on the new antenna system until we’re able to test it in the wild. in tests we performed last year, we found that non-iPhone AT&T handsets (BlackBerry, for one) could maintain voice calls in thin cellular conditions far better than the iPhone 4. We’ll be interested to see if the iPhone 4S shows any improvement in call quality and drop rates in similar circumstances. On the data side, we’ll compare throughput speeds on the iPhone 4 with those on the new 4S. So stay tuned for that.

The other thing that made me skeptical of Apple’s new antenna system is the limited information that came out about it yesterday. many questions remain unanswered. “iPhone 4S now supports twice the download speed with HSDPA of up to 14.4 Mbps and iPhone 4S is a world phone, so both CDMA and GSM customers can now roam internationally on GSM networks,” Apple said in the announcement. But the speed increase to 14.4 mbps maximum throughput is the result of an upgraded radio chip inside the phone, not the result of the antenna, as Apple seems to suggest.

Also, when Apple talked about the new antenna system and the speed increases yesterday, it referenced the GSM parts of the phone. what about the CDMA parts? Does the CDMA radio go up to 14.4 mbps too? is the CDMA antenna inside the phone also split in two? if the answer to either of these questions is no, it doesn’t bode well for Verizon and Sprint who will sell the CDMA flavor of the phone. and it goes without saying that the 4S won’t run on the fastest wireless network in the land, Verizon’s LTE network.

So regardless of the antenna details and speed boosts, the iPhone still is not a true 4G phone. How much longer do we have to wait?

HTC Rhyme Review: Hardware, pH-Balanced – Techland – TIME.com

As a male tech writer, Verizon Wireless’ HTC Rhyme is not a phone I would buy for myself. its plum exterior appeals to more feminine tastes, and its tech specs are far from the cutting edge.

Still, I was happy to take the HTC Rhyme for a spin on a loaner device provided for review. It’s an intriguing handset, with a focus on industrial design and useful accessories instead of raw power. For that combination, Verizon is charging $200 on-contract. but beyond the Rhyme’s skin-deep beauty, is the premium price justified? Read on to find out.

(MORE: Top 20 Must-Have Android Apps)

On the outside, the Rhyme lives up to its promise with a tasteful blend of soft-touch material—it feels almost leather-like—and aluminum, which runs around the phone’s edges and in a stripe through the backside. Grab the Rhyme off a table after a few minutes of idle time, and it’ll be cool to the touch, its rounded edges fitting easily in your hand. The curvy design reminds me of Apple’s iPhone 3GS, but a hair thinner and with classier materials and a slightly larger 3.7-inch display. on curb appeal alone, the Rhyme earns high marks.

Internally, the hardware is nothing special, with a 1 GHz processor, 768 MB of RAM, a 5-megapixel camera in back, a VGA camera up front, 4 GB of on-board storage and an 8 GB microSD card pre-installed. I didn’t notice any glaring hardware issues, but the software stuttered a bit while installing apps, and compared to the Super AMOLED plus screen on my Samsung Galaxy S II, the Rhyme’s Super LCD screen doesn’t have quite as much pop.

Once you start playing around with the phone, the Rhyme’s character flaws start to show. The base software is Android 2.3, which I won’t review in detail. (For that, you can read our Nexus S review.) but in short, I love Android’s customization options, its turn-by-turn directions, its widgets and its excellent Google apps. I don’t like how it can be buggy and choppy on older hardware, and how the latest and greatest apps tend to launch on the iPhone first. Your choice in phone should have a lot to do with whether you value Android’s perks enough to tolerate its weaknesses.

In the case of HTC phones, you also must consider your feelings for Sense, the user interface that HTC applies to all its Android phones. I’ve never cared much for Sense—it’s always been a crisp-looking interface whose low framerate looks unappealing when set in motion—and it’s no better in the Rhyme. sure, recent Sense updates have introduced an excellent lock screen, with shortcuts to common apps like e-mail, texts, the camera and phone calls. And the photo filters in Sense’s camera app are lots of fun. but getting around the interface can be a chore, thanks to a carousel view of your home screens that spins out of control if you swipe too fast. The latest version of Sense also sports a new look for its app tray and phone buttons, which follow you across home screens, but they only draw attention to the need for more docked buttons, for tasks like text messaging and web browsing.

The Rhyme’s version of Sense also features a new home screen widget that’s as pretty as it is frustrating. it occupies the entire screen, and includes the date, time and weather in the bottom-right corner, and a row of sliding notification tabs on the left side for mail, messages, calendar and photos. You can tap each tab to slide out more information, but why you’d keep them stowed away is beyond me, because there’s nothing to see on the screen underneath. Although you can customize these tabs to include other apps, only the four default apps can show live information on the home screen. The widget is removable, of course, but I’m ranting about it because it sums up the entire HTC Sense experience—a well-meaning interface undermined by puzzling decisions.

So far, I haven’t described a phone that’s worth $200, but Verizon’s hoping that the Rhyme’s bundled accessories bring the value in line with the $200 price tag. I might agree, if the included speaker dock kicked a bit more bass, and displayed incoming e-mails and text messages. right now, it only shows time, weather, music controls and a couple app icons, limiting its functionality. The Rhyme also includes a cubic “Charm” that attaches by cord to the headphone jack and lights up for calls and texts, and a set of “tangle-free” earbuds, which, despite my best efforts, would not tangle.

With the Rhyme, HTC has proven that it can design elegant hardware. but the phone’s mid-range specs and my lack of enthusiasm for HTC Sense make me hesitant to recommend the Rhyme for the ladies, at least not for the same price as the iPhone and other high-end handsets. a price drop might make this beauty worth a second look later on.

Square Updates Mobile Payments App

By Lauren Goode

Mobile payments start-up Square is aiming to make payments with smartphones even easier by introducing an updated app that allows users to pay without taking their phone or credit card out of their pocket.

In addition, the company plans to update its app on the Google Android mobile operating system to incorporate these new features soon.

SquareThe latest version of Card Case allows users to “open a tab” via the app once they’ve arrived at or near a venue that uses the Square application.

The latest version of Square’s payment app, Card Case, includes something called “automatic tabs”, which uses the location-based technology of iPhone iOS5 to detect when users have arrived at or near a venue, such as a coffee shop. If the merchant is also using a Square application, the buyer can simply say his or her name to pay for the coffee. The updated Card Case application also includes Twitter integration, through which business owners can see reviews and comments from customers.

Square was co-founded by Jim McKelvey and Twitter creator Jack Dorsey and officially launched in December 2009. in June, the Wall Street Journal reported that the company had snagged $100 million in funding from a group led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, valuing the company at $1 billion.

In may of this year the company introduced Square Register, a software system through which merchants can receive and analyze payment transactions. currently, there are two ways that businesses can use Square: by accepting a credit card payment through a free, square-shaped dongle that plugs into an iPhone or iPad, or by a customer using the Card Case app, which the merchant then tracks using Square Register. Square says 20,000 merchants are now accepting payments via CardCase, and that it has shipped 800,000 Square readers. The readers are also sold with a rebate at Apple stores, Best buy, Radio Shack, Target and Wal-Mart.

But Square is not without competition; the mobile payments space has been growing rapidly, and the companies within the space use varying forms of technology for payments. Last spring Google introduced Google Wallet, which allows consumers with certain Google Android phones to pay for items by tapping the phone against a special terminal. EBay’s PayPal unit has predicted it will process $3 billion in mobile payments this year through PayPal Mobile. Intuit and VeriFone systems have gotten into the game, and financial services companies like Visa have also unveiled their own forms of mobile payments software.

Square declined to comment on the timeline for Square CardCase availability on the Android platform, saying only that it would be “soon.”

UPDATE: Square is planning an update to its Android app to incorporate these new features soon. an earlier version of this post incorrectly said it was planning an Android app soon.
