How I got my unlimited data plan back on AT&T

Posted by tornadowrangler on November 2, 2011 12:19 am 6

I was an original iPhone owner, back when they offered a $20 unlimited data plan (and threw in 200 text messages). It was cheap because it wasn’t 3G.

Well, I upgraded to a iPhone 3G, and then of course the price went up to $30 and lost the included text messages. oh well. It was unlimited, and it was still awesome.

About 18 months later, I’m eligible for an upgrade, and need one badly. My iPhone was almost non-operational due to not using a case. the on-off button didn’t work, the volume buttons were broken, and it always thought earphones were plugged in (meaning the only way to talk on it was to use headphones). I had to get a new phone, but didn’t have the budget at the time for a new iPhone. (I’m a teacher with 2 kids and the wife works part time, so yeah).

Plus, I wanted to try something different anyway. I’ve been an Apple fan-boy since I was 10, but I still like to try new things. I got a Palm Pre+. this was shortly after HP purchased Palm, and they were offering them for free with new contract.

Of course, this meant I had to lose the unlimited iPhone data plan, forever.

About 3 months later, I can’t stand the Palm Pre. I instead opt to revert to my original (non-3G) iPhone, which while not fully operational (volume buttons), was more-so than my iPhone 3G. Since it’s not using 3G data, I call up AT&T and ask to be put on the original iPhone data plan ($20 for unlimited Edge and 200 text messages). To my surprise, they do it.

A couple months later, I get a refurbished iPhone 3GS for free. I have my dad on my phone plan, and he didn’t want a new phone, so I ordered it on his line and then switched out the SIM cards.

This is when the magic happened. I didn’t call up AT&T to change the data plan to a 3G compatible one. instead, I get a text the next day saying it’s been automatically switched to one compatible with my iPhone. It was the $30 unlimited iPhone data plan.

So, it seems all you need to get unlimited data on AT&T is an original iPhone. put your SIM card in, switch your plan to the original iPhone data plan, wait a day or two for it to take effect, then put your SIM card back in a 3G network iPhone.

Let me know if you try it and it works. I’m curious to see if it was just a fluke or will happen every time.

Remains of the Day: iPhone baloney

AT&T: ‘tremendous, tremendous demand’ for iPhone 3GS (The Loop)

People like the iPhone. And people like free. So it really shouldn’t be shocking that people really love a free iPhone. AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega told analysts that the carrier has seen “tremendous, tremendous demand” for the iPhone 3GS, which is now free with a two-year contract. Wait, are you saying consumers will flock to get something for nothing—even though that something will eventually end up costing them even more money?

iPhone 4S ad (Apple)

Apple has launched its first iPhone 4S ad; unsurprisingly, it focuses on Siri. Because if it didn’t, Apple’s intelligent assistant threatened to lay waste to the entire Cupertino campus.

Online pre-orders for iPhone 4S now available in 22 new countries (9 to 5 Mac)

Speaking of the 4S, it appears that Apple has opened up pre-orders to 22 additional countries, including Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. what? The Avengers Cinematographer Reveals Some Scenes were Filmed with An iPhone (ComicBookMovie.com)

Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey reveals that not only did he shoot part of the forthcoming adaptation of The Avengers on an iPhone, but that those scenes were even in the trailer. really, it wasn’t hard to tell.

Anyone with a Smart Cover can break into your iPad 2 (9 to 5 Mac)

First uncovered on a German forum, a security flaw in iOS allows you to circumvent an iPad 2’s passcode using a Smart Cover. Of course, this wacky exploit only gives you access to the most recent app or screen that was open, so I plan on just changing my wallpaper to read “NICE TRY, SUCKER.”

Officers warnings over dangerous goods

the seized phone chargers

Newham residents warned to be on the lookout for dangerous phone chargers and religious icons on sale in the borough.

Trading Standards officers working for Newham Council have seized 10 counterfeit iPhone chargers from shops. Similar illegal models which have been confiscated elsewhere in the country have exploded and caught fire.

Ten counterfeit chargers were taken from three shops in the Green Street area during a series of raids in September. A further 16 were taken from around East Ham (High St North end).

They were selling for just 99p – when legitimate models cost about five times that. They are believed be manufactured in China and smuggled into the country.

The main danger is poor wiring which means users are not properly protected against electric shock from short circuiting. Some models have only two pins – which is illegal in the UK. They have no markings or instructions. there is no name or trade mark and no model number.

Councillor Unmesh Desai, Executive Member for Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour, said: “These items are potentially highly dangerous and we would urge any would-be customers who spot them to get in touch with our Trading Standards officers immediately.”

Trading Standards are considering prosecutions and are tracing the items back to the wholesalers – who are believed to be based in the Midlands.

They also seized 13 models featuring Hindu Gods and five clocks with figures of Christ on the cross.

The brightly coloured items, which have been confiscated from High Street shops in the East Ham area light up with flashing lights. They range in price from £30 to £175.

Officers warn the goods – which they suspect have been imported illegally from the far East – do not have proper electrical checks or certification. Some have loose wires.

Shoppers risk electrocution or the threat of them catching fire, according to an independent tester.

Anyone spotting these items should contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506 or consumerdirect.gov.uk

An Ice Cream Sandwich would make me happier than an Apple

The Brunei Times/ANN Wednesday, Oct 26, 2011

As I was playing with the iPhone 4S one evening (I’d rather not say whose), I quickly put Siri through a series of tests, but sadly, I was not as impressed as what was demo-ed by Siri users in the States.

After a good 30 minutes of running Siri through every silly thing I could think of, majority of the answers led to Siri prompting me to search the Web.

I was getting nowhere, which led me to tinker with the 4S’s camera.

The camera was decent, the shutter was definitely faster than the previous models, but quality wise, I wasn’t blown away after comparing it to the Galaxy S II, Sensation or even, my own Atrix.

I also went through the iPhone 4S with a series of speed tests, opening numerous websites on both the 4S and my Atrix’s browser using the same connection at the same time.

You’ll probably think I’m lying but my phone (released very early this year) was beating the 4S on almost every website.

After reading many readers’ feedback, it still doesn’t make sense to me why one would buy the 4S if they already had the iPhone 4.

That’s the argument I’ve been presenting eversince the 4S was launched.

Don’t get me wrong, I used a number of “new” features like iCloud, iOS5, and so on, and thought to myself again, for $948 (apple.com.sg) maybe I could actually…heck no.

With respect to the late Steve Jobs (and a classy move I might add), Google had delayed the launching of its hero phone, the Galaxy Nexus, which it worked with Samsung, but we’ll get in-depth with that next week.

This new handset is equipped with Google’s next generation Android, Ice Cream Sandwich.

There’s no need to tell you that it has real multi-tasking, full Flash support, cloud support, “PC Free”, and so on, because that’s what Android users have been enjoying since almost two years ago.

On the other hand, I’ll tell you that the target of this latest Android version 4.0 is to unify the operating system’s handset and tablets.

Google takes the best features from both Gingerbread (phone) and Honeycomb (tablet), refines them, and adds a couple of interesting new toys.

Also below, you’ll get to see what you’ll be able to experience if you get your hands on an Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) only.

A very powerful camera:

Although the Galaxy Nexus, currently the only device with ICS equipped, has only a 5 megapixel camera, its camera has a zero shutter lag feature. You could keep tapping on that shutter button and it’ll constantly snap away.

What more, with 1080p recording, you can still take stills whilst the video is being recorded.

Besides that, some basic features such as panoramic camera, and photo editing have been implemented into the camera app.

If it works as well as it looks, users can probably cut down on third-party photo editing tools.

Google has been taking advantage of NFC (Near Fields Communication) for its Google Wallet feature and it’s something the Japanese have been using for a while now. They tap their mobile devices on subway gentry’s or when boarding a bus, paying for meals, anything to do with payment, you do it through your phone.

NFC allows this to happen and Google had it in since its previous Google phone, the Nexus S.

Android Beam uses this technology so when two NFC enabled phones come together, you can ‘beam’ apps, contacts, websites, music, videos, links, and so on, to the other phone.

Furthermore, Android Beam isn’t an app, it’s a functionality, you don’t open it up if you want to beam me something. You just put my phone against yours.

Nokia’s dead-end N9 (running MeeGo) has an even more advanced NFC feature where you tap earphones or headsets and other accessories to it, and it just links up.

Whether ICS has something of that sort, is still unknown.

There are times when your phone runs an app that you don’t really need/want. With the new data usage tracker, you can allocate how much data can be used for a particular app or for your whole month. It also shows you more detailed readings like how much data you’ve used on Wi-Fi or on your 3G network.

Ultimately, this give you more control of what’s using your 3G, and if you’d like, you can permanently stop the app from running, leading you to a higher battery life / lower (prepaid) bill.

This isn’t Siri, sure, but by the way, some jokers made a version of Siri called Iris (that’s Siri spelled backwards) that offers almost the same function but was created only in eight hours.

Anyway, that’s besides the point. Android 4.0 or ICS has a more advanced voice input feature that types as you speak.

You can do it in any language you want. this also gives you the ability to avoid those lost in translation moments when travelling abroad.

I can already imagine the looks I will get when I ask a non-English speaking person to talk into my phone so the words get translated.

My Motorola has a fingerprint reader, where you swipe your pre-installed finger across the sensor and it unlocks the phone.

It’s a novelty, I stopped using it after three days.

Although the concept of having Face Unlock is cool, where you just put the phone up towards your face and the camera reads the facial shape leading you to an unlocked phone, I remain a little skeptical. the demo during ICS’s launch failed, but online demo’s show that the feature works extremely well. Well, if your face fails, you can always use a PIN to unlock.

Whether or not this is just a novelty, or will work well in real life situations, only time will tell.

Widgets is something exclusive to Android devices, and it’s something really nice to have. It gives your phone that customised feel so that you don’t feel like you’re holding the same thing as everyone else.

With ICS, Google lets you re-size your widgets, bringing another dimension to an already highly customiseable OS.

ICS gives you a new user interface, a font optimised for the OS, a new multi-tasking feel/look, a more feature-equipped lock screen like you’ve seen with HTC’s Sense 3.0, a smarter keyboard, and new widgets, just to name a few.

HTC Rhyme: Pretty in plum

By Athima Chansanchai

With the introduction of the HTC Rhyme from Verizon Wireless, smartphones have crossed over into chick lit territory.

You’ve probably seen the commercial by now (and if you haven’t, you can see it below) and it’s clear, HTC and Verizon are trying to tap into a more feminine feel for smartphones. But with the androgynous iPhone 4 and the new mostly female-identified digital assistant Siri of the iPhone 4S, it’s got some competition from the get-go. still, now that there’s no Palm Pre, the Rhyme has an opportunity to reach that same iPhone demographic with an alternative that uses Android.

I know from talking with many of my women friends that size really does matter when it comes to phones. sure, we have purses, but we don’t want to lug around more than we have to. I have the Samsung Droid Charge, and while I love the size and clarity of the ginormous 4.3-inch screen, it does seem rather obese next to the skinny mini that is the Rhyme. It’s enough to give a girl a complex. the Rhyme is very similar in size to its older cousin, the HTC Droid incredible 2. (But that model is already in slimming black.)

An HTC Rhyme next to a Samsung Droid Charge

My review unit arrived in tasteful packaging, a plum colored box to match the phone. underneath a 3.7-inch touchscreen display, the $200 smartphone is powered by a 1GHz processor and Android 2.3. It has 4GB of built-in storage, a 5 megapixel rear–facing camera and a VGA front–facing camera.

This phone incorporates HTC’s Sense Android skin. With the latest version (3.5), you can design the home screen with much more flexibility than you might find on other Androids. Pick what you want to see on each page and flip to each using the touchscreen.

Ok, so the ad above makes the Rhyme sound like it wants to be your Siri, but without the wisecracks … and without the intelligence of that particular system. the Rhyme wants to be your new best friend, mostly by coming with accessories intended to augment your smartphone life. So how does this “seamless system” measure up?

I wanted to like the tangle-free headphones, I really did. But the reason they’re tangle-free is because they’re big. They sound great, but they remind me of old-school airplane headphones. They may be in-ear, but the wires themselves are wide. It’s not the most elegant design and in fact, feels a little cheap. But try as I might, I could not tangle the things, so they work! if that’s more important to you than looks, you’ll like it.

The docking station? It’s bigger than it looks. Bulky. I wasn’t looking for another display clock, thanks. I suppose if you don’t already have one, it could be useful. And it is nice that there are external speakers built in. But you have to download music to it — it won’t work with streaming music services you may use, like Music Beta by Google.

It also comes with a charm call indicator. this jeweled wire is supposed to be something you could hang outside your purse to alert you to a call in a discreet way, while your phone remains hidden. It can be set to light up when messages and phone calls are received.

I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt, but really, it is more distracting than just leaving your phone beside you on your seat, or on the table. if you’re doing business, it’s quite common to see phones out and about, after all. And when the charm does light up, you’re still going to answer it, right? I found it kind of strange, this little lit-up cube attached to a vibrating phone. I’m having a hard time finding just how useful it could be.

Still, overall, I like the Rhyme. It’s a good-looking phone, perfect size for a purse (especially a small one) or even a jacket pocket, and it functions quite efficiently. I loved watching HD videos on it through YouTube, and the my Music Beta playlists as heard through the tangle-free headphones drowned out other sounds around me, including a TV. the camera is a fairly typical 5 megapixels in resolution, but it performs well, and those that like to be creative with composition can do it on the front end, using effects filters on shots.

The phone’s interface also allows you to choose the apps you want to see, prioritizing those you use frequently. It’s more streamlined than other Androids, including Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, found on the Droid Charge. And the Rhyme’s pre-installed apps aren’t so obnoxiously female targeted, with only one (Endo-mondo) that comes close, as it is an exercise tracker that you can also share with friends. Facebook, Scan and Amazon Kindle are all standard.

It’s girly, but not in a hello Kitty cutesy pink way, which is okay if you’re raising awareness for breast cancer, but can be annoying otherwise. the Rhyme is more sophisticated and very easy to like — kind of like a friend who is familiar with you, but can also still surprise you.
