We suspect that many of the TFTS readers, or at least the ones that are super pumped in terms of Apple will be heading out to pick up an iPhone 4S this morning. And while that will certainly make for a nice deal, or a fun deal given the recent humor surrounding Siri — Best Buy Canada has announced a decent Free Phone Fridays offer for those who are willing to pick up an iPhone 4.

That being said, the details are coming by way of the Best Buy Canada website. more specifically, the Free Fun Fridays promotional page on that site. And for those not as familiar with this offer, it breaks down as follows;

“Every Friday in October, Best Buy Mobile is offering a different smartphone for FREE with 3-year new activation!”

Needless to say, today’s offer is on the iPhone 4, where those interested can pick it up for just $0.01. Sure, not quite free, but close enough. anyway, there are a few catches with this offer. first, this offer is valid for today only. In other words, you will need to head on out and, sign your agreement and make the purchase today October 14th or you will miss out. Second, this offer is only valid with select carriers. those carriers include Bell, Telus and Virgin Mobile.

Otherwise, both Fido and Rogers have a low priced but not quite free iPhone 4 available at $49.99. And just to clarify, this special pricing for the iPhone 4 is for the 16GB model.

And lastly, it also looks like certain carriers have certain colors available. According to Best Buy Canada, it looks like Bell and Virgin Mobile will have the iPhone 4 in white with Telus offering the black model. And as for the Fido and Rogers part of the deal, those include a black iPhone with Fido and a white iPhone with Rogers.

iPhone app, The Eatery, broadcasts your food to friends

Are you a mindless eater who is better at updating your Flickr page than tracking your calories? Then the new iPhone app, The Eatery, might be the app de jour for you.  The nearly one-year-old San Francisco start up, Massive Health, has launched a social app that encourages users to photograph and share everything they eat.

The free app records the amount, time and photo of your food and posts it to Facebook so that you and your friends can rate your cuisine choices — and thus encourage you to eat better since your food is on display for scrutiny by all.

This app is on the more social end of the nutritional spectrum from the dozens of calorie counting apps available for mobile device, such as Lose it and Calorie Tracker.

Massive Health CEO Sutha Kamal created this app with the concept in mind that self-awareness sometimes enough for people to make better choices.

“It’s not helpful to know that your favorite brownies have 400 or 600 calories,” Kamal said, in a statement. “What’s helpful is discovering that you’re more vulnerable to them in the late afternoon.”

Earlier this year, Massive Health raised $2.25 million in seed funding from Mohr Davidow Ventures, Felicis Ventures, Greylock Partners’ Discovery Fund and others.

The focus of Massive Health is to create apps that will aid people suffering from diseases such as diabetes, through social and game methods.

How the app works

Once you download the app to your iPhone, you are asked about any dietary restrictions you have such as gluten-free, kosher, vegetarian, etc.

Then you link the app to your Facebook and you are able to instantly start uploading a picture of what you are eating now, the portion size and whether you would rate it a healthy option or a not healthy option.

Once your picture and stats are uploaded other friends are able to comment and rate your plate to either reinforce your good choice or rate and comment that you made a poor choice.

The app also allows you to see trends in your eating throughout the week and other periods of time.

Maybe make the worse choices after 6 p.m. or perhaps you are lacking color in your diet — you can see whats gone in your body and make changes for the better.

Funders have a taste for food sites

This year, everyone has been cooking up food-based websites and applications that bring more social into the eating scene. in January, the food photo sharing site Foodspotting rounded up $3 million for its Series a funding.

A month later, the small social meeting startup Spoondate recieved funding from the startup incubator group 500 Startups. and and as the warm days of summer enetered, Flip camera creator John Kapalan landed $10 million for a grilled cheese chain restaurant with iPhone integration in the ordering system, The Melt.

It seems that venure capital groups can’t get enough of the flavorful startups this year. Ecommerce and flashsale sites are even seeing the potential in adding food-centric extensions, including the GIlt Taste addition that rolled out in May, allowing online shoppers to find high-end food that fits their taste.

The trend of catering to tastebuds isn’t loosing steam anytime soon, especially with all those glossy photos of perfectly poised food that no one seems to get tired of clicking through.

Why The Eatery more fun than functional

A picture may be worth a thousand words but can’t depict 1,000 calories so well. while, this app may help spot trends and stay accountable with judging friends, its nearly impossible to accurately determine the true health based on a picture.

Salads dressing, cheese, condiments and countless other elements are caloric and hidden from the eye of the camera so you could have color-rich plates of high calorie or fat food and onlookers may rate that its great.

Much like the popular, Eat This, not that series, foods could look similar but are hiding pounds of sodium and saturated fat that you didn’t know about.

This is a better tool for people aware of health and nutrition basics that has informed friends that can hold them accountable for their quest to cut out the meat or eat more salads or limit processed foods. Essentially it’s a fun tool in the tightening belt of health and weight loss, but by no means it this app qualified to track your health.

Since I have some very health-conscious Facebook buddies that love to judge, I might consider using this app to keep me honest for my new Year’s resolutions and flogging on a public forum to get in fighting shape.

iPhone 4S battery issue reminiscent of ‘antennagate’

(Credit:CNET)

commentary Apple’s silence on a problem that appears to be affecting a number ofiPhone 4S users is bringing back memories of last year’s “antennagate,” something that could give hope to those expecting a fix.

As noted last week, users have flocked to Apple’s support site to complain about lower than advertised battery life on the new phone, which went on sale in mid-October.

On paper, the new phone beats out its predecessor by one hour of 3G talk time, yet falls 100 hours shorter when it comes to standby–the time a phone will continue to run when not being used for phone calls or other functions. But affected users say Apple’s numbers are far too generous, with fully charged devices running out of juice during the course of a workday, even with minimal use.

Despite what’s now a 170-page support forum thread (among several others like it 1, 2, 3), and a number of media stories on the matter, Apple has refrained from weighing in to users or to press.

Why is that? Look no further than what happened when users took aim at theiPhone 4’s antenna design last year. Owners posted videos holding the phone tightly, showing that it would eventually lose some reception, something that was criticized as being a hardware flaw. Apple did not weigh in on the matter for three weeks, deciding instead to hold a press conference to address what had been dubbed “antennagate” with a sea of data to show that other phones had similar issues.

Is it too soon to classify Apple’s lack of reaction this time around to what happened last year around theiPhone 4 antenna? not necessarily.

First off, this is affecting some users with the iPhone 4 as well as those with Apple’s newer iPhone 4S. in those cases it can be assumed that the culprit is iOS 5, a major software release Apple put out just ahead of the iPhone 4S hitting shelves that adds on a number of new features to the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 hardware.

So does that mean the software is half-baked? The run up to its release would suggest otherwise. Apple spent a considerable amount of time in near-public testing before delivering it to users (seven beta versions for developers, in fact), all inside a four-month span. that said, it’s not without some bugs.

Apple's A5 processor, the first dual-core processor to come in an iPhone.

(Credit:Apple)

Looking at the iPhone 4S specifically, it’s easy to wonder if it’s the hardware that’s slurping the battery life away. new to the 4S is a dual-core processor, a first for an iPhone, though not a first for an Apple device, with the iPad 2 jumping to Apple’s A5 processor earlier this year. A teardown by iFixit shortly after the iPhone 4S’ release showed it to be the very same processor that’s in the iPad 2, though running at a lower speed to save energy.

Does that really hold up as something to point a finger at though? during Apple’s iPhone 4S unveiling, Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, suggested otherwise, saying the company had not only matched the battery life of the previous model but beaten it in some cases. “You would think if you put a processor that powerful inside a super thin phone, one of the things you’re going to trade off is battery life. But the hardware and software teams have worked really hard to get industry leading battery life as well,” he said.

Then again, if a report in the The Guardian last week is to believed, Apple engineers have been contacting some unhappy iPhone 4S users who had weighed in on the growing support thread about the issue, all in order to collect relevant phone usage logs. in a follow-up over the weekend, the outlet then suggested that the problem had to do with turning off an automatic time zone setting that was pinging for location data non-stop. Yet users who read CNET’s own coverage of that fix, and a number of users on Apple’s forums said that didn’t help.

What’s next?Looking back at what Apple did to handle both the iPhone 4 antenna issue in 2010, as well as the location collection log that researchers highlighted earlier this year, one thing becomes clear: if it’s going to be addressed, there’s going to be data crunching on Apple’s end to either back it up or debunk it. As late Apple co-founder, then chief executive officer Steve Jobs said at the antenna press conference last year (emphasis mine):

“We heard about this not long after we started shipping just 22 days ago from today. It’s not like Apple’s had its head in the sand for 3 months on this guys, it’s been 22 days. Apple is an engineering-driven company. We’ve got some of the finest scientists and engineers here in the world in the areas were need to create our products. and the way we work is we want to find out what the real problem is before we start to come up with solutions. So we’ve been working our butts off for the last 22 days to understand what the real issues are here, so that we can come up with real solutions.”

That sentiment was echoed again in April this year, when all eyes turned on Apple to explain what it was doing with a collection of unencrypted location data that was being stored on iOS devices. in an interview with All things D, Jobs said:

“We’re an engineering-driven company. When people accuse us of things, the first thing we want to do is find out the truth. that took a certain amount of time to track all of these things down. and the accusations were coming day by day. by the time we had figured this all out, it took a few days. then writing it up and trying to make it intelligible when this is a very high-tech topic took a few days. and here we are less than a week later.”

In both cases Apple issued a software update to address the issue at hand shortly after acknowledging it publicly. looking back on the release of the iPhone 4, it took Apple less than a month to release the first iOS software update for that device, which arrived as a patch of sorts to change the way the phone displayed carrier signal strength. for the location database it was two weeks for a fix that would remove the data store outright every time a user turned location services off.

So that brings us back to now. Will we get a similar software update for any battery issues? History would suggest that’s the case if it affects a big enough group of users. in those two aforementioned cases it was everyone with an Apple device, which does not seem to be the case with this latest issue. could there still be a problem though? A 170-page thread on the matter, and reports of Apple contacting users about it for more data suggests so. Just don’t expect a press conference about it if there’s a fix in store.

AT&T iPhone 4S Bundle Deal on Mophie Juice Pack Air Case

Went down to my local AT&T store to swap around the phones on my account since I used my son’s upgrade eligibility to get the iPhone 4S, and saw a deal too good to pass up on the Mophie Juice Pack Air iPhone 4 and 4S case. this deal includes the case, a dock and a charger for $80.

The Mophie protects your iPhone while adding some extended battery time (1500 mAh or 6 hours of talk time) for those long days when you use your phone heavily or when you are roaming and therefore your battery drains quicker.

K. T. Bradford included this great case in our 10 Best iPhone 4S Accessories list. also Warner recommended it back while back. the case retails for $79.99 but you can find it cheaper at Amazon, as her list indicated. I wanted one since I often find myself draining my phone battery while on vacations or business trips.

In just a few hours of use, I like the fact that it fits the phone well, feels good in my hand and has a micro-USB port on the bottom right corner. that means I can charge my iPhone 4S with my Android phone charging accessories while it is in this case. the switch on the bottom left corner turns the battery charger on or off so you can keep the battery fully charged until you absolutely need it. I picked up the white one, but they come in black and red too. Each of them comes with a silver trim around the edges.

In addition to the Mophie case they bundled two other charging accessories. Kensington makes a nice iPhone Charge and Sync Dock. Hook up the USB cable to your computer and insert either the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4/4S insert into the dock. Quickly dock your phone to sync it over the cable instead of the slower new Wi-Fi sync that comes with iOS 5 or directly through the Apple cable that comes with your phone.

I like iOS 5 wireless sync, but sometimes you have to hook it up to a computer. Other times you just want a quick way to plug in to top off the battery. the dock holds the phone up in portrait mode so I put it on my desk at home next to my computer. I’ll leave Twitter running or listen to music while I work. It retails for $29.99 but you can find it for about $15 on Amazon.

The third item in the bundle was a generic car charger. It works. not much more to say about it.

The Mophie case is the star of this bundle, however, the Dock works well as does the car charger. neither the dock nor the car charger can charge the phone while it’s in the Mophie case. I just gave the car charger to my wife to use for her iPhone in her car.

The bundle costs $79.97 at AT&T. I think that’s a good deal. If you ordered the three items separately they’d run over $120 retail and around $90 on Amazon.

Hands on with the Knomo London Avignon laptop case

We take a hands on look at the stylish and sophisticated Knomo London quilted laptop bag.

Here in the lifestyle section, we get bombarded with accessories left and right made especially for the iPhone and the iPad. we love these accessories as much as anyone else, but what happened to cases and bags for those of us who still have to carry around actual laptops on a daily basis? well, lucky for us, there are still plenty of good laptop-bag-makers out there, including the stylish and sophisticated brand Knomo London. The brand makes luxe bags and cases focused on laptops for both men and women, and we got a chance to get our hands on one of the designs for the ladies.

The Knomo Avignon Slim Brief ($100) is a sleek and sophisticated quilted laptop case that will carry your 13 or 15-inch laptop in style. it has both top handles and a detachable shoulder strap, faux-leather accents, a zip top, and two large side pockets to carry laptop accessories or other daily essentials that might otherwise go in your purse.

The bag looks fairly simple, but the devil is always in the details. Knomo bags all feature 15mm-thick high density shock-resistant foam to keep your laptop safe and protected from any bumps or falls. The inside is lined with soft fabric and has a unique Knomo tracker ID tag that will help the company get your bag back to you should you lose it. if found, someone can call the number listed on the ID tag and Knomo will trace the bag back to you. The company also offers a 2-year guarantee on each bag for possible defects in materials or craftsmanship, so you can be sure that your bag will last you until you trade in for a newer computer.

For the style of bag, we were very impressed with the construction of the Avignon Slim brief and the overall high-quality feel. The outside nylon, faux-leather trimming, and the inside fabric all feel like high-end materials, and we like the cranberry-colored contrast lining in the purple version we tested out. The bag fit our 15″ laptop perfectly and the front and back outside pockets were definitely big enough to hold a charger, notebook, smartphone, wallet, and a few other essentials. we like this detail because often bags that look like laptop sleeves, as this design does, don’t allow any room for any extras.

Our only complaints about the bag are that the shoulder strap isn’t as nice-looking as the rest of the bag and attaches to the bag in strange spots, and that the black trim isn’t real leather. The faux-leather that is used seems to be good quality, but for the price tag real leather would be nice. other than those small details, this is a bag that we would definitely recommend for women who need to carry a laptop on a daily basis but still want something that’s stylish and doesn’t scream “laptop bag.” it wouldn’t be a great choice for someone who has a ton of other stuff to keep in the bag, as it is a ‘slim’ design, but it’s perfect for a simple laptop carrier with room for just a few extras.

The bag comes in several different colors and is also offered in a quilted wool felt version.
